Spurs eradicating the moaners

The Aston Villa game away highlighted a factor that is used by players when things are not going well, but also it raises the point about a mouthy player and the effect they have.

Spurs were losing at Villa and didn't look like creating anything, let alone scoring. In situations like this one player may start to wind up an opposition player known to be volatile. He'll get in his ear and antagonise them in the hope they will explode at which point the wind-up merchant will claim complete innocence. Some players go to pieces under this pressure, others simply hide but the end result is the same, you are reducing the opposition effectiveness and therefore increasing your own.

Ryan Mason reacted in a controlled manner towards Christian Benteke after a tackle but in such a manner that it had aggression. He nudged him in the back, leant into him and put his head close to Benteke's, who responded by raising his hand and shoving Mason in the face. Benteke was shown a red card and Spurs turned the game around.

Another aspect that affects a team on or off the field is a mouthy player. These fall into two categories, a mouthy player who is good humoured and encouraging his team or individual players within it. He is an on the field leader and a positive influence. The second category is where the problem lies, these mouthy players re moaners, they are negative, they look for the negative in everything, always blaming someone else, feels he is being let down by others.

Successful people associate with successful people, they don't want to associate with negative moaners, people who will subconsciously be trying to drag you down to their level. In a team sport, these people are a cancer in the dressing room and they have to be dealt with. The two options are to work on changing their attitude or getting rid of them, regardless of who they are.

It is pointless a star player being a negative mouthy player as the performance of the rest of his team will be affected, negating the work he is doing. harmony and happiness are conducive to success, understand and appreciate your team, especially the guys doing the unseen work.

The best option to change a mouthy player is for an experienced had in the dressing room to draw him to one side and have a word, the players themselves sort it out, that is the ideal situation. I go back to November when it was the youngsters, particularly Kane, who stood up to put matters right in the dressing room. Capoue and Kaboul have subsequently left, Adebayor has the worse attitude of the lot. Tottenham are trying everything to get rid of him and there are suggestions he'll be frozen out without a squad number if he doesn't go while there is no way back either for Lennon either. Pochettino does not want their negative influences near the first team.

The ideal is a team in a mentally good state of mind, positive and knowing that in adversity they can rely on their teammates to be positive. Harry Kane has it in abundance, you hear it whenever he speaks, people could learn a lot from him. Hugo Lloris is again positive, he understands the importance of the mental side of the game and often speaks about improving the mentality at Spurs. These two will be vice-captain and captain this season, with Jan Vertonghen rumoured to be the other vice-captain.

Under Tim Sherwood Vertonghen's attitude was wrong, under Pochettino it is right. Players can change, which is why an experienced player has a word with a youngster to help him see the light and change his ways. The coach though may have to deal with the situation, he'll have a quiet chat first explaining he is too critical and the side need you to be positive.

The coach will have to figure out why a layer is negative. As a coach you don't simply correct a fault because it will happen again or another fault will develop, you look for the root cause of a fault and repair that, then the faults that arise from it won't happen. So why is a player negative?

Is he insecure, frightened, nervous, does he lack confidence, is he overawed, does he not feel appreciated? There could be many reasons or a combination of reasons. The coach will have to have a one-on-one with him to get to the bottom of things, while bearing in mind the player may not know the answer himself, it's not as simple as ask a question and get an answer.

I lean on my experience of playing at a level, probably above my natural ability because of my attitude. I was an unsung player who produced steady performances, a captain knew exactly what he was going to get from me, he didn't have to tell me my role, I worked that out for myself and drew inspiration and confidence from the fact I was picked every week. I would practice on my own ahead of a game before
anyone else had arrived so I could perform from the word go.

Later as a captain and coach of youngsters I would have to build the confidence of players and handle the negative ones myself. You can't simply tell someone don't do something, they have to understand why before they will change their approach. You find the root cause of each and work on changing that then everything else falls into place.

Adebayor it seems, only performs if he is the number one and loved, anything else and he doesn't perform to the same level, when he gets an opportunity he doesn't take it because mentally he isn't right, mentally he is in a general 'it's unfair' mode, he wants to blame others for his situation. Harry Kane is the opposite, he is given a chance, he takes it, he did it for Spurs, he did it for England.

If a player lacks confidence for whatever reason then you have to build his confidence, that may mean helping him to see the importance of his role or showing him what he does is appreciated, is important. Build his confidence and he won't have to moan at others, indeed he may well become a positive influence himself helping others, there is nothing more powerful than a convert. Turning a negative player into a positive player unlocks more than he has shown to date.

A positive dressing room is an absolute must for a winning side. It has to be built, Pochettino is shedding the negative and introducing positives. Everything at the moment is pointing to a positive Spurs future.
