Former golf pros explained what Spurs need

Watching the talk before the Open Golf started yesterday and Mark James recalled an old joke, 'How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb, only one but the lightbulb must want to change.'

The former professionals were talking about the mental side being the most important element of golf and talking to a sports psychologist he was saying the most important aspect was a player understanding problems happen and to simply embrace and enjoy everything, a positive state of mind.

If a golfer wants to win they have to be able to mentally cope with everything thrown at them, clubs not arriving for practice, delays to start times, weather, even the clothes one wants to wear not being ready (some are very superstitious). Some players learn quicker than others, some cope with problems better than others, some are more creative and, therefore, do better than others, but all have to mentally simply enjoy it. It all applies to every sport including football.

Tottenham has a squad who enjoy themselves, you look at the players leaving and they are the moaners, the complainers, the it's not my fault people, that mentally is any sport is totally the wrong attitude. In a football game, you will see players sitting on the floor complaining to the referee rather than accepting his decision and getting on with the game. That player is temporarily leaving his teammates with 10 men. It is the same principle that players should always stay on their feet whenever possible as on the floor they are out of the game. It's why you see a lot more shadowing of players today whereas the game used to have tackles galore.

Most players will complain but some take it too far and being proved fight becomes more important to them than the game going on around them. It is just one action you can study, in a whole series, to help assess a player mentally. He has to embrace such problems, accept them, a referee isn't going to change his mind. He is taking his mind away from what he should be concentrating on, retaliation shows a mental weakness, you are being affected by others or by events and they are controlling you, rather than you controlling them.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Aaron Lennon, Younes Kaboul and Etienne Capoue were all involved in the November dressing room fracas after the Stole City defeat. One doesn't know the content, but it seems pretty obvious it was about the effort being put in and certain players were not buying into Pochettino's tactics, certain players wanting changes to suit them rather than them changing to suit the system. It's the same issue, it's mental again, it's a wrong approach and they are all expected to leave this window.

We are trying to build a squad who are mentally right, young and hungry, willing to learn is obviously an easy first step, but not all of them will turn out with the right attitude when things don't go their way. Roberto Soldado, who Pochettino likes, has not been a success, but he has not spent his time complaining either. You don't hear him complaining about a lack of opportunity or a lack of game time, he always seems to have a smile on his face off the field and trains hard by all accounts. Things are not going his way, but he isn't blaming everyone else.

Mousa Dembele recently said he'd like to play more but that ultimately it is down to him. That is taking responsibility, that is exactly what we want from a Spurs player. It is hoped he is starting to turn the corner and improve his game.

Look at the attitude of Mauricio Pochettino himself, h doesn't complain, any problems he simply tells the media it's a part of football and you have to deal with it. Fans like to see a manager shouting and screaming from the sidelines, Sven-Göran Eriksson was constantly slated for being cool and making decisions how you should, with a calm collected approach, taking emotion out of the equation.

There is a time and a place for everything but a team must know the coach is in control, a team for whom things are not going right need a calm coach you will give them a sound reasoning of how it can be put right, that what has gone has gone, forget it. Of course there are times when you play on a player's emotion, but you don't just shout and scream at players to make yourself feel better, it has to be calculated to produce a certain result. Everything a coach does is to produce a certain result, everything has a reason.

All sport is the same, it's all in the head, those with the best heads win. It's your head that decides how you use your talent if you are not as successful as you should be then it is your head that figures it out, not your feet.

Positive attitude brings optimism and motivates toward success. With a positive attitude, your life becomes happier and more successful. The doom and gloom fans are part of our problem. There is nothing wrong with highlighting a problem or aspects that need improving but that should be backed up with how and why it can be improved, not a moan for moaning sake, which is what we get the vast majority of the time with them. Their attitude is the opposite of what achieves success.

If you see the world through a negative perspective then you need to change your perspective, not have everyone change to suit you. It is not always easy to fo, especially with an ingrained anti-Levy anti-ENIC perspective which pre-determins an attitude and response to anything that happens and this clouds judgment. I have been vociferous about certain players and certain attitudes, they have no place in a winning club.

The right attitude is a choice, only you control your reactions just as ever player controls theirs.
Negativity breeds failure. you either weed out negative players or help them change their perspective.
Look for the positive, you'll enjoy yourself more and you'll achieve more.
Positivity breeds positivity, which breeds success, they go hand in hand, nobody is successful with a negative attitude.

It's a tremendous positive, the attitude Mauricio Pochettino has bought into the club. Show him the right mentality or you won't play, just what Tottenham need to turn the club around, now it's just a section of supporters whose mentality need changing.
