Ghoulam changing agent rules out Spurs

TRANSFER TALK

I read today that we are watching 26-year-old (27 next February) Algerian left-back Faouzi Ghoulam who plays in Serie A for Napoli, according to the Italian press.

It would seem our name has been thrown at the story as we have no reason to be watching him. 25-year-old (26 in July) English international Danny Rose isn't going anywhere and 23-year-old (24 in April) Welsh international Ben Davies has just signed a new contract.

Ben Davies has played 1,704 minutes, Danny Rose has played 1,803 minutes so those suggesting Davies might move on because of a lack of game time are looking rather foolish. Both are under contract until 2021.

Ghoulam  is out of contract in 2018 so enters his last year in the summer. It is quite normal for someone to leak to the press that clubs are watching ahead of contract negotiations. The threat of losing a player supposedly forcing the club to offer better terms.

On this occasion the suggestion is that the Napoli and his agent, have fallen out so no new contract has been signed yet. Has echoes of Nabil Bentaleb and his representatives demanding the pay of a top player, then there was money orientated Emmanuel Adebayor. Ghoulam, it is suggested, is going to change his agent from Alessandro Moggi to Jorgé Mendes.

For those that remember Daniel Levy has supposedly issued an edict that we will no longer deal with Jorgé Mendes, once again suggesting a deal has no chance.

Discussions are still taking place amid the suggestion that Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are all waiting to see if he becomes available. Reading the various stories and allowing for translation I get the impression that teams who the authors feels might need a left-back have been named.

The suggestion from Calciomercato is that Ghoulam wants to more than double his wages, suggesting he is the best left-back, along with Alex Sandro of Juventus, in Serie A.

His current annual salary is £699,117 (€800,000 - AUS$1.12m - US$858.708) which equates to £13,445-a-week. He is demanding £1.75 million (€2m - AUS$2.29m - US$2.15m) equivalent to £33,654-a-week.

While we need to upgrade certain areas of the squad and we must keep an eye on players who become available who can do that, this story appears to have very little going for it.
