Scout sent to watch Czec Republic striker Schick

SCOUTING TALK

I understand Tottenham Hotspur sent a scout to Italy to watch the Genoa versus Sampdoria Serie A game on Saturday that ended in a 1-0 away win for the Marco Giampaolo managed side. It was a local derby as Sampdoria are based in Genoa.

We were not alone at the game, Premier League rivals Manchester City had a scout there, Italian sides Juventus, Roma and Inter Milan has scouts present, German side Borussia Dortmund and French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais also sent representatives.

It is though we were all watching 21-year-old (22 next January) Czech Republic centre-forward Patrik Schick. The young Sampdoria striker stands 1.87 m (6 ft 1 in) tall and has been capped three times and scored one goal for his country, having progressed right through from the Under-16 side.

He was formerly at Sparta Prague, where he began his professional career against Teplice in a 3-1 defeat on 3 May 2014. He had a spell on loan at Bohemians Praha 1905 (previously named FC Bohemians Praha) the following season making 27 appearances and scoring 8 goals.

Once his loan spell ended he was transferred to the Italian side 13 days later for a fee of £3.48 million ((€4m - AUS$5.62m - US$4.26m). In 25 games since, although his time on the pitch only totals 935 minutes in all competitions (Serie A 22 games and Coppa Italia 3 games). He has managed to net 9 goals (7 in the league, plus 2 assists), a goal on average every 104 minutes. Schick has only started 6 games, 5 in the league, 1 in the Cup.

He is decent in the air but needs to work on holding onto the ball, essential if playing as a lone striker. It is a skill he will learn with practice.
