Njié Terms Agreed

Tottenham have turned their attention on Clinton Njié despite Emmanuel Adebayor playing silly buggers and deciding he doesn't want to move from his London base.

The man is a nightmare, he doesn't answer calls apparently and has an over inflated opinion of himself. That translates into him thinking he can do whatever he wants and everyone will just accept it and bend to whatever he wants. It's the classic I'm doing you a favour playing for you kind of player.

Whether he goes or not makes no difference now to whether we bring someone in or not, he will be frozen out and he knows that. Does he actually want to play football or is he another Heurelho Gomes? Time will tell, his representatives are meeting Aston Villa later this week.

Some of our targets are waiting to see if a better offer comes in which is of course their right. It does delay signing and frustrates fans, some of whom can't quite accept that a player is permitted to make an individual choice, but that is the reality of football transfers.

Njié has indicated he is happy to come to Tottenham and while we negotiate with Lyon we have discussed terms with the players representatives. Terms have been agreed says the CEO of EDS Sports Ltd so that just leaves a fee to be agreed.

Clinton N'jie has agreed personal terms with Tottenham Medical pending.

Lyon are about to sign his replacement, 30-year-old French international Mathieu Valbuena, who is having a medical at the club today.

All the 'pushing hard' stories doing the rounds stem from French paper L'Equipe. It is no so much the transfer fee as to how it is paid that is currently the stumbling block. We have previous with Lyon of course, we bought Hugo Lloris from them on exceptional terms. Tottenham like to do deals that have as much add-ons as we can possible put into them, that lowers the main part of the fee.

Lyon having had their fingers burnt once are pressing for a bigger up front fee, in other words a greater guaranteed fee and less on possible payments if certain things are achieved, number of games played, goals scored, qualification for European competition etc.

Everyone is confident a deal will be struck this week because that is all that is holding a deal up. The less we can have as the main part of the fee means lower instalment payments over the term of his contract and therefore greater spending power in subsequent windows, not greatly extra but when you add all the deals up it mounts.

Tottenham basically pay £25 million in instalment payments each year so the difference between what we pay out and £25 million is our transfer budget. This is added to by income from instalment payment from sales. The actual transfer fee is just a number, the only figure that matters is the size of the instalment payments, hence our tough negotiations to maximise future spending power when money may be tighter as the stadium is built.

The situation is further complicated because Lyon need a centre-half and want Federico Fazio, they have tried to include that in the Njié deal, we prefer to keep it separate.
