Build it and they will come

Top players are constantly stimulated by challenges and obstacles, they don't hide or see it as an affront to them if a club buys a player to challenge them for their position, they up their game and maintain a level of performance that says 'you can't drop me'.

If you have a player who sulks or simply moans and we can all name players who have left with this approach then he is not the sort of negative influence you want on the hungry youngsters coming through. They create the wrong environment, they pull people down to their level, create discord. The only time it is acceptable is when it is clear it is being used as a motivational tool, a player is moaning to fire himself up, if it's a moan because he isn't handed something on a plate then you need to get shot of him.

The same approach can get tired so you need to find new injections of inspiration. Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wender have all used the backs against the wall approach on purpose so his team come out fighting. They have portrayed the world as being against their side at time and used that as a motivator for his team, the 'we'll show them, they won't defeat us' approach.

Our youngsters can draw inspiration from successful players at the club. They can see what Hugo Lloris does, how he conducts himself and imitate or they can look at Harry Kane and say if he can do it so can I, they see the work, his mental approach and adopt the similar strategies.

Buy a set of talented youngsters who have the ability to go to the next level. Absolutely vital that you only buy those with the right mental approach. Take Saido Berahino, he, by all accounts, is a changed player. Instead of the kid who thought he had made it he has knuckled down under Tony Pulis, his approach to his football has now changed, where before he would have been a bad buy, now he suddenly becomes a good one.

You take this group of players under your wing, you help them, build them, guide them, mentor them, manage them and build your existing club into a new club, one that is filled with enthusiasm and ambition. Do that and you build a squad, a team that has that same enthusiasm and ambition, but spurred on by the next generation coming through. It is a recipe that is a breeding ground for success.

What you are doing is creating a living breathing entity that feeds itself, you just have to find fresh young talent to pump into it, those with the right approach will come out the other end, those without will fall by the wayside and we only need the best of the best from that approach at the club.

Once you have the system in place it runs itself, at the moment we don't we are building it, the scouting system, for instance, has to be rebuilt, the football side of the club has had a restructure, identifying and recruitment of players has changed, a head coach that fits the strategy has been employed.

It is quite clear the club is building itself with a successful business model, a model aimed at getting us competing with the best on the pitch. Tottenham have had many new beginnings, but this is the first one that looks like taking us somewhere, it's the first one where you can say you can see what is being built.

There are other elements to go, the fans need to be turned into financial producers, not just supporters. I don't mean the fan buying his season ticket, but the fans around the rest of the world who don't go to games. They are an unused army, who could promote the club, grow the fanbase and thus increase commercial revenue on top of any revenue driven by shirt sales.

Everything can't be built at once, but it is clear it is being built and that is what makes this such an exciting time in our history. The club is on a journey, fans can either push that forward or pull it back, see something is being built or pray to be the plaything of a financial messiah.

If you can't look to the future and see how to get to where you want to be then you will never get there. Spurs can see it, drawn a map and have begun the journey. I'm going to enjoy the ride.
