2 new centre-backs in January

The defence is still a way from being sorted, centrally. We have Fazio and Dier at the moment with Chiriches no where near the standard required and Younes Kaboul having only ever given us one good season.

When you add to that Jan Vertonghen, who virtually gave up last season when he threw his toys out the pram and astoundingly expected to be named captain this season, there are worries. Yes he may have been promised it by the hierarchy, which simply goes to show the hierarchy are lacking in leadership qualities themselves, but the players didn't want to follow someone who selfishly quits.

Contract until: 30.06.2016
Position: Centre Back
Market value: 16,72 Mill. £

The Belgian international then throws his toys out the pram again and refuses a new contract, added to which he allows himself to be made a complete fool of by Loic Remy. He may not have a problem, he says, with the club but when you are not totally behind something then you can not give it your best, however hard you try, Vertonghen is in that situation.

Reports suggest that Liverpool have begun discussions with his agent about a move so clearly he is looking for an exit, which will require a replacement.

Vlad Chiriches is talking to clubs in the slower paced Italian football again and Franco Baldini is tasked with trying to offload him. Last news was there were at least three interested parties, all no doubt either wanting a bargain or a loan deal.

Hector Moreno told Espanyol in the summer that he wanted to join Tottenham, he is a former player of Pochettino's from his time as Espanyol manager so knows him well, he brought him to the club in the first place. Espanyol wanted to wait until after the World Cup to boost his price but the Mexican broke his leg and has only just returned.

He has had 31 minutes in the 5-1 La Liga thrashing by Barcelona and 74 minutes in the 2-0 win against Alaves in the 4th round of the Copa del Rey.

I read a report suggesting his contract was up in the summer but it isn't it runs out in 2016. His value when he has one year left is less than his value when he has two years left so where we may have had to pay £8 million last summer, that is probably more like £6 million now and £4 million in the summer.

Jan Vertonghen's contract runs out in 2018 so to get maximumf money for him we have to sell him now, each year will just reduce his value, it has sunk £2.5 million since January and that gives us less money to bring in new players.

A 10 minute subs appearance can tell us a lot

Assume for a minute it's Vertonghen and Chiriches out and Moreno in, where does that leave us?

Federico Fazio, Hector Moreno, Eric Dier and Younes Kaboul. Given that we play more games than most other Premier League clubs, than all Premier League sides last season, then is four central defenders enough? Do we now need the five we currently have and have had for a couple of seasons.

I'd suggest given our injuries we do and with the club also looking at Napoli defender Raul Albiol, it would seem they seem to think so as well.

Albiol is Spanish so is brought up in football where the team comes first, Moreno and Fazio both played Spanish football, the team first, not the individual. It seems we are building the squad with players who play as a unit rather than as individuals who play within a unit, as we have at the moment. Less me me me, more us us us.

Italian broadcaster RAI report we have begun talks with the players agent over a move, surprising given his age, 29. However he used to play for Real Madrid and has 50 Spanish caps so will add winning experience to an inexperienced squad.

He joined Napoli for £10.56 million in July 2013 and is now valued around £8.8 million because of his age. He'll be 30 next September and players decrease in value greatly at 30 given how few years they have left, you rarely see 30-year-olds going for big transfer fees.

Albiol has won the UEFA Cup and Copa del Rey with Valencia, La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España with Real Madrid, the Coppa Italia with Napoli, the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship twice, FIFA Confederations Cup and UEFA European Under-19 Championship with Spain.

It's safe to say he knows about winning, safe to say he has a winning mentality and that is greatly needed in our dressing room. Players like he, Moreno and Fazio can help the youngsters with the mental side of the game, teach them to remain calm and channel their energy into better performances.

Having built the back Pochettino can then work his way forward within the team upgrading other defective components.
