A 10 minute subs appearance can tell us a lot

A positive mindset will produce better results than a negative mindset but can a player try too hard and lose sight of the best way to achieve success as a result?

If a player is brought on as a substitute for the last 10 minutes, how he thinks, how he views the situation will determine his performance. He has two choices.

One is negative, he feels he isn't being given enough time, it's taken substitution to appease him and waste a bit of time. In such circumstances he is unlikely to make any impact and the commentator will tell you he hasn't got the pace of the game. We saw this a lot with Andros Townsend in the second half of last season. The negative mindset produced a negative performance.

On the other hand a player could decide to be positive, I've been given a chance to show what I can do, to have an impact so I'll take it. In that positive mindset a player is more likely to do just that, far more likely to achieve. Aaron Lennon came on for the last 8 minutes against Crystal Palace and was involved in creating two chances, one directly, one as part of the build-up

A team of players with the second attitude are going to achieve more than a team of players with the first attitude. If you ran through the Spurs squad now, how many would you place in Group A and how many in Group B?

Players who feel good about themselves will achieve more than those who don't and it's entirely down to each individual player how he decides to feel. Pochettino can provide them with the opportunities to improve their footballing self-esteem and positive mindset, it's up to them to then take it.

Can a player like Lamela try too hard though? Things are not going right for him but you get the impression that he is trying to do it all himself sometimes to prove to everyone his quality. He seems, at times, to run at three players and try to beat them all, when with vision, drawing those three players to him and taking them out the game before passing would be far more beneficial to the team.

You don't have to do everything yourself to have a positive impact. Kaboul is another who when things are going wrong tries to do everyone else's job and regularly end up on the right wing. He isn't a better winger than our wingers. Far better to knit everything together and make sure the team is playing as a team, often things go wrong because we play as individuals waiting for an individual piece of skill to make a difference.

The Spanish approach is that the team comes first, the Pochettino approach is that the team comes first, the English and Northern European approach is that the individual come first. Until we adjust the sum will not become greater than the parts.
