Will we try and tie up Schar on a free transfer?

Swiss defender Fabian Schar would have cost £10 million in the summer, next summer he costs nothing, he'll be out of contract. He had a 3-year deal when he signed in 2012 with the option of an extra year extension.

Will we try and tie up Schar on a free transfer?

The Basel centre-back played at the World Cup and was watched by us last season. We are continuing to monitor him with the January transfer window coming up and are watching him play in the UEFA Champions League group games. So far Basel have only played Real Madrid but next they play Liverpool and they play them again on December 6th so we can see how he performs against Premier League opponents.

Schar is in the last year of his contract so the 22-year-old, he'll be 23 in December, can arrange a free transfer for the summer or Basel can sell him and at least get something for him if he is going to leave. Of course Basel are hoping he will tale up his one year option and will be offering him a new contract in the hope he stays longer.

Arsenal are also monitoring his situation and last summer he was on a shortlist Barcelona had drawn up as an alternative if they couldn't get their first choices, a list that also included Jan Vertonghen.

A smaller or no transfer fee will mean he can command higher wages, which then become a problem for us when a player doesn't perform as expected. We see it time and time again that we can't get rid of players and they just train for wages, clogging up a squad place.

I'm not for one minute suggesting Schar would be one of those players just that we have to do all the research possible and ascertain the desire of players before we sign them, that way we'll avoid so many mistakes.
