Will Vertonghen be consigned to Notts Forest reserves now?

What we need is another game to take the despondency away, bring a bit of positivity back to the squad and fans but as I highlighted in an earlier post, we have caused ourselves a problem.

Will Vertonghen be consigned to Notts Forest reserves now?

On Monday 15th September, before the Patizan Belgrade UEFA Europa League game, I wrote a post entitled Thursday is causing team selection problems which, while affecting all players, was mainly about the difficulty we are going to get ourselves into with our centre-backs if we are not careful.

It was essential for me that Vlad Chiriches and probably Younes Kaboul played in the UEFA Europa League tie to leave Fazio and Vertonghen free to play at the weekend in the Premier League. Unfortunately we didn't and we were lumbered with two players not worth their places.

What do we do now, play these two during the week leaving Fazio and Vertonghen free for the weekend or are those two now our second choice centre-backs and are going to play Nottingham Forest reserves in the League Cup. Is that what Fazio left Sevilla for? He captained them to a victory in the Europa League, delaying his introduction to the Premier League serves no useful purpose.

I just hope it was a case of feeling Partizan Belgrade was a tough tie and we wanted to make sure we didn't lose so played our best centre-backs, but that messed us up for the weekend.

Captain of Spurs or Europa league winning captain?

I did a lot of research on Pochettino and he talks the talk, what he says is good, clinical, attitude, must have winning mentality and his anger when the players don't follow instructions is evident. Football is not about 11 men going onto a pitch and doing what they feel like, it about 11 men going onto a pitch and doing as they are told.

That's why managers are always issuing instructions from the sideline, instructing the players what he wants them to do. We have heard previously that Andros Townsend doesn't follow instructions and there were whispers after Vertonghen had said he really enjoyed working with Pochettino that they had a bust up.

If they had then it would only have been over the captaincy and if Vetonghen plays midweek then it would be pretty plain something has happened. He is our best centre-back, he shouldn't be playing second XI football in the UEFA Europa League and the League Cup while an imposter of a centre-half plays in the Premier League.

All eyes on the centre-backs on Wednesday.
