Barcelona tell Vertonghen we might want you

The press are full of stories about Barcelona's interest in Jan Vertonghen but he is not their first choice to replace Carles Puyol who has now retired.

Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo claim that Mats Hummels & Vertonghen have been told they 'might be needed' as the moves for their first choices of 20 year-old Brazilian centre-back Marquinhos, currently at PSG and 30 year-old Jérémy Mathieu, stall.

Jérémy Mathieu naturally wants to move to Barcelona as soon as possible and has informed Valencia of that. Barcelona president Josep María Bartomeu and Valencia chairman Amadeo Salvo plan to meet personally next week to try to reach agreement on a fee.

Barcelona want to pay £11.93 million (€15m) Valencia want £15.9 million (€20m).

The move for Marquinhos looks unlikely to happen. PSG simply refuse to meet with Barcelona and give a firm 'No' every time over Marquinhos. There have been suggestions they could talk later this summer but PSG have absolutely no intention of selling.

Laurent Blanc has told Radio Monte Carlo that he has no intention of letting his centre-back go.

"Marquinhos is staying, that's for sure. We plan to keep hold of all of the same players as last season, although there will more than likely be the odd departure."

New Barcelona manager Luís Enrique wants the situation sorted in the next couple of weeks. He has told Barcelona he wants two centre-backs to alternate starting alongside Gerard Piqué.

In addition to Hummels (25) and Vertonghen (27), Barcelona have shortlisted Sevilla’s Federico Fazio (27) and Basel’s Fabian Schär (22) as potential targets.

Jan Vertonghen is just one iron in the fire but we should know before the end of the month where he is a Spurs player next season.
