Tottenham Hotspur Training

The dust has settled, Mauricio Pochettino has got his feet under the table, Spurs fans have calmed down about who they want and sit squarely behind a man and not a name.

The glitz and glamour of a 'name' manager was passed over in favour of a man who, after extensive checks, it was felt was the right fit, a man who could take on the big task at hand.

Mauricio Pochettino may not have been the first choice of everyone but he carries an air of a down to earth, get the job done man. He has that tough streak that Daniel Levy was looking for but carries it inside a friendly demeanour.

Andre Villas-Boas had the same and a few trophies under his belt as well, but he also had a stubborn streak, a streak that would not admit a mistake, a confrontational streak, which all brought matters to a head.

Early days and we have to wait and see if Pochettino's strong hand and friendly approach, comes without the ego. He doesn't appear to have the chip on his shoulder that, in hindsight, AVB possibly had.

Training has begun for some of the squad and as you would expect the noises are encouraging. Gym work, running and football drills have seen youngsters in the shape of Zeki Fryers and Erik Lamela make positive outlooks for their own seasons to come.

A new manager means going to work and assessing each other. It appears from Pochettino's words that certainly from his side it has been positive and the initial barriers have successfully been overcome.

“We are very happy with the players and we’ve enjoyed the training.

“It’s a difficult period for the players because we need to work hard but there has been a great atmosphere.

“It’s important for the players to get to know us and for us to get to know them and at the same time we’ve also started to introduce our philosophy and style into the group.

“The players have responded well and have trained hard every day.”

It's almost like a pre pre-season with players involved at the World Cup taking a break to recharge the batteries before they rejoin and start training. It's a chance for a player like Lewis Holtby to stake an early claim to catch the Head Coach's eye with hard training.

You earn a game in the first team with what you produce on the training field, you don't simply give someone a chance or a run of games as some crazy fans seem to think, that's a sure fire way to ruin your season. You can't get back the point you drop by giving someone a fair chance.

The chance is training, train like you should be in the team and your chance will come, then you have to take it, not expect a run of games to take it. You turn it on straight away if you are good enough.

Harry Kane was given a start against Benfica. It didn't go well. He then came on as a sub 2 weeks later and had an impact in both Spurs goals. That earned him a start in the Premier League, he scored and his performances demanded further games.

That is how you get yourself a run of games, that is how you get a chance. It begins on the training field.
