Spurs want South American centre-back

New boss Pochettino sees strengthening the centre of defence a priority with Vlad Chiriches proving not up to the task and Younes Kaboul failing all season to find any resemblence of form after two years of injury.

Tottenham have Jan Vertonghen's quality and with the other two struggling will probably have to keep hold of the usually dependable Dawson, who himself struggled with the troubles all around him.

New Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino tried to sign 26 year-old Ecuadorian centre-back Frickson Erazo of Flamengo last summer while he was manager of Southampton. His agent Orlando Villarreal, was negotiating with the Saints over a £2.5 million transfer but nothing came of it. In February 2013 Manchester United were also watching him and at the time he was asked about interest from top European clubs.

"It's true that there was initial contact, but it will not help if my performance drops. I try not to think about this. It's really flattering that big European clubs are watching football in my country, but if you think about playing with Real Madrid or Manchester United you risk losing concentration."

Villarreal confirmed that he met a Manchester United representative in Portugal to discuss the player.

Erazo now has had seven seasons of professional football under his belt and been allowed to slowly mature. His first came through the Quito’s El Nacional system before earning a transfer to Barcelona Sporting Club (Ecuador) in January 2012. Two years later January 2014 he moved to Flamengo in Brazil for £2.55 million.

He is tall (1.90m 6ft 2in) and extremely athletic, with the ability to take the ball off a forward without having to smash into him. He is excellent at playing well-weighted long passes, which will please all those Dawson knockers!

Erazo has 37 international caps and will be at the World Cup with Ecuador where Franco Baldini will cast our eye over him. The defender has four years left on his contract with the Brazilians and it's thought he has a game that would suit the Premier League.
