7 June suggestion has legs it seems

Back on Sunday 7 June I wrote an article promoting the talents of Moussa Sissoko and suggested that Spurs could do a lot worse than signing him and now it seems we have begun a move for him.

The 25-year-old (26 in August) Frenchman fits our youth policy and is a powerful presence in midfield with his physique and energy. To me, he seems the type of player who would fit and do very well in our midfield, adding that bit of steel we at times lack.

Ryan Mason has the desire, the determination but lacks the physical presence of someone like Sissoko who in January spoke to French radio station RMC and claimed that Chelsea were watching him. Reading through the comments from that article clearly there were some from Newcastle fans - 'on his day a world beater, but has the heart of a pea', 'he wants Champions League football' and 'he thinks he's better than he is' or 'he is always looking for the next move, he#s better than a mid table team, perhaps Arsenal'.

Fans do love to be bitter about a player which of course clouds judgement, he impresses consistently, but his success or failure will depend, as it does for all players, on his mentality. If he wants something enough he will make a success of it. The 2016 European Championships in his home country is only a year away and a priority for him is playing regularly, preferably at a bigger club than Newcastle he is reported as suggesting by French media outlet Foot Mercato.

"Didier Deschamps has clearly told us that he would select as regularly starting players. At one year of the euro, it should not change clubs and be on the bench. At the same time, I want to just play for one of the biggest clubs. I want to play including the Champions League which I am deprived in Newcastle. One day or another, my time will come. Anyway, I see myself staying in England. "

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have scouted him according to Foot Mercato who have spoken to his agent. Manchester United chose Morgan Schneiderlin, our preferred choice but a motivated Sissoko would be an excellent alternative in my view, especially given he is proven in the Premier League. I think he is perhaps more suited to us than James McCarthy in the role, we can't have everyone who lacks a physical presence.

The French outlet infer that we have made contact and had even made an informal offer which the agent refused to comment on, Spurs regularly ask all parties not to talk to the press when we are interested in a player. He has a contract until 2019 and they suggest a price of £16.31 million (US$25.21m - AUS$34.60m - €23m) for Newcastle's most saleable asset.

A story to watch.
