Rose Runours

The are plenty of rumours and stories doing the rounds about much improved left-back Danny Rose right now in forums and in the press.

Danny Rose has been heavily criticised by Spurs fans until last season. Plenty of accusations have been hurled at him, some rightly, some wrongly. He improved significantly last season and was called into an England squad but still some cling to their criticism.

Much of it is through a lack of understanding of modern day football, what is played on a park on a Sunday has nothing to do with professional football, they are almost different games, one is organised with tactics and specific roles, the other is, for all the good intentions, is a group of individuals trying to make it up as they go along.

You will often hear the complaint that a full-backs first job is to defend, but is it? If you are an excellent defender but offer little in attack you will not be playing at a top four club, you are of little use to them. If however you offer a threat going forward you are of interest.

Danny Rose was a winger we converted to full-back because we felt we could get more out of him there, we didn't convert him because of his defensive abilities, we converted him because of his attacking abilities. In the modern game a full-back has to supplement the attack whenever possible. That mean he has to make the winger defend, he has to dictate to his opponent where he is going to have to play his game not let the opponent dictate to him.

Speed is essential to play the role at the top level. A full-back has to be able to get forward and have the speed to recover if the attack breaks down. Kyle Walker gets criticised for doing this all the time yet all he is doing is playing the role correctly, there are other aspects of his game that need work but getting back when he has been part of an attack isn't one of them. A full-back tucks in and when a ball is played wide rushes out to close the man down, he doesn't mark a wide man today.

Rose used to jog back, now he doesn't and fans need to recognise the improvement rather than clinging to an out of date opinion. He isn't perfect, he still dives in and gives away free-kicks in dangerous areas but he made giant strides last season.

Chelsea and Manchester City have both been credited with an interest in Rose, do you think that is because he is the best defender or because of his attacking ability? Clearly it is his threat in attack that is more important to them so in their eyes his first job is to offer an attacking threat, the second is to defend. I appreciate it's a whole package but the point is the attacking threat is vital, the phrase 'his first job is to defend' it's out of date.

Is Danny Eose leaving? Well I can't give a definitive answer, the talk is growing because someone claims to have overheard him say he wants to. Mauricio Pochettino improved him last season, Danny Rose is clear about that himself, he has frequently mentioned it, clearly they get along. One set of whispers say he is not going anywhere and another he may go if a big offer comes in.

I read on a Chelsea site that they were expecting to trigger his £10 million (US$15.49m - AUS$19.88m - €13.61m) buyout clause. I can only imagine that was a foreign site as buyout clauses in English football are not common, in Europe they are. In Europe if you want a wage increase it is linked to an increase in your buyout clause and this clause bears no relation to your actual value, it's merely a mechanism to stop players moving and stop clubs pinching players cheaply.

The French were originally suggesting Lloris had a buyout clause simply because they expect contracts to have one and were surprised to find out he doesn't. Tottenham do not put buyout clauses in contracts and if they did do you think Daniel Levy would allow a buyout clause of £10 million for Danny Rose when we paid that for Ben Davies and Luke Shaw went for £30 million (US$46.31m - AUS$59.66m - €40.84m)?

If he had a buyout clause it would be £30 million, it wouldn't be a realistic figure so I think we can dismiss those rumours. Gas he had his head turned? Well that is another matter entirely, we will have to wait and see but I believe he'll be at Tottenham next season.

He wants to play football, he doesn't want to be second choice and sit on a bench or be confined to cup matches. Rose wants Premier League football, he gets it at Tottenham, would he get it at Manchester City or Chelsea or will that go out the window when they throw money at him like it did with James Milner, regular starter to occasional player?

Manchester City need home-grown players and like Chelsea have done before will happily throw a daft wage at a player to have him sit on the bench with little chance of playing. Do you stay at Spurs and play or collect a fat wage and take your chances.
