Atlético Madrid want to keep Alderweireld

Atlético Madrid are trying to keep hold of Tottenham and Southampton target Toby Alderweireld according to Mundo Deportivo.

They begin by suggesting that £7.16 million (US$11.38m - AUS$14.62m - €10m) will not be enough and that the fee could rise to £17.90 million (US$28.46m - AUS$36.54m - €25m). However that is not a figure suggested by Atlético but one bandied about by our press. He was bought from Ajax for 10m EUR.

According to the Spanish outlet the Belgian international is central to Atlético plans for next season, even though he hasn't been in the two years since they signed him. They are in discussions and trying to convince him o stay.

Atlético Madrid are a buy and sell club, they take players, improve their transfer value and sell them on at a big profit. They are about to sell 30-year-old Brazilian central defender João Miranda to Inter Milan. In his first season in Spain though Simeone only gave him 10 full games in La Liga and only 908 minutes in all league games, he spent most of his time sitting on the bench.

Alderweireld prefers to stay in the Premiership where he had adapted to the game after a successful season at Southampton, who have a £7.16 million buyout clause they can activate. If however Atlético do sell him then they will need a replacement lined up first. They are concentrating on the sale of Miranda first and then try to resolve the problem of their two preferred targets not having EU passports, 19-year-old Argentinian Emanuel Mammana from River Plate or Chancel Mbemba, the officially 20-year-old Congolese international at Anderlecht.

This is one transfer that may drag out, if it is to happen.
