Choose the Alderweireld story to suit your opinion

Kieran Trippier has arrived so we have speculation about Kyle Walker, we won't know how he stands up to football next season having had 21 games since March 2013.

Tottenham are prepared to listen to offers for him, common sense tells us are probably rubbish, he isn't this dreadful full-back some make out, especially as most don't understand the role of a full-back in the modern game. The man in the street has never played the role yet magically knows what it's requirements are. Experience of playing as a defender in the traditional manner on a Sunday morning bears no relation to the requirements of a full-back in the Premier League.

Undoubtedly Yedlin is the one to have a loan spell. In the centre we have signed Kevin Wimmer and seek another centre-back. While we are being linked with many players for other positions it all seems very quiet on the central defender front. Is that because we already have someone lined up, someone we have rejected before.

Toby  Alderweireld, the Belgian international teammate of Jan Vertonghen, is currently at Atlético Madrid. He spent, as I'm sure you all know, last season on loan at Southampton, so now has a seasons experience of the Premier League. Southampton want to sign him and according to Lyall Thomas, a Sky reporter, on Twitter, he wants to join Southampton. If you read The Sunday Times however, who don't go in for the transfer tittle tattle say he has told friends he is joining Spurs. You pays your money and takes your choice depending upon your pro or anti opinion.

There is though the fact that the article says he has been told he will be first-choice, that casts great suspicion. It is highly unlikely that he will have been told that given it is based on performances and for the first game last season Eric Dier was picked as a centre-back. Where would that leave Fazio if Dier and Wimmer were playing in the UEFA Europa League or if Fazio played what of one of the others.

The Ajax pairing is understandable, it might give our back four some familiarity with each other but promised to be first choice, highly unlikely, he'd have to fight it out like everyone else.
