Paulinho's is a forced future at the club

When I heard about the Inter offer for Paulinho I wrote to say it didn't have a hope of being successful, the difference in what they wanted to pay and what we paid was too great.

Paulinho's is a forced future at the club

Fans may not like it but football is a business and the deal made little financial business sense. Tottenham unsurprisingly turned down the deal. Prior to that we had stories of clubs wanting to take him on loan which I also wrote had little or no chance of success as again they do not benefit Tottenham. All a loan would do is delay the problem. We would have to find a replacement and then when he returned form a loan spell we'd have to pay the wages of two players. Clubs could then hold us to ransom knowing we have to get rid of one so making a huge loss on the player.

He has been a disappointment since he arrived really. He lacked composure in front of goal and his finishing is nowhere near the Frank Lampard class. He started reasonably well but then Charlie Adams had his say and we have never seen a player since. he returned half the player and played as if he was saving himself for the World Cup.

He was dropped by Tim Sherwood as a result and he only put some effort in in the last couple of games of the season. His performances in Brazil drew criticism from everyone with the Brazilians themselves complaining he wasn't the same player. He has rested and then returned once again as a half hearted player and it is only in the last couple of outings that he has started to have the energy that we thought we had bought.

He is another player who appears to have started to get their act together since the November power struggle and Levy's 'get behind Pochettino or rot' message.

There are two ways these things can go in a transfer window, either someone offers the right money for Spurs to accept or the player has to remain at the club. Scenario one is highly unlikely to happen thus the club, player and head coach have to prepare for scenario two.

That means Mauricio Pochetino telling the media that the player, in this case Paulinho, has a future at the club, is a part of his plane etc etc. It is all rubbish, just PR to show a united front as if some major decision over his future has been reached. If a decent offer came in that 'future' would disappear in an instant. We are stuck with you son so we had better make the most of it is the real message.

Of course the player has to appreciate that he can either rot or work his socks off to get a chance and then take it, thus rekindling his career. The signs are that Paulinho is starting to do that and he must continue to perform with high energy in the cameo appearances he makes. Start performing, then he has a future, until he does he doesn't, regardless of what PR says.
