Paulinho to Roma

Roma are said to be after Paulinho who was our record signing at one stage last summer when we paid £17 million to secure his services.

Paulinho to Roma

The return has been disappointing. He started off brightly having no trouble settling in and gelling. A box-to-box midfielder he was constantly seen in the opposition box but to often was found wanting in front of goal. He seemed to lack composure at the vital moment.

Once Charlie Adam decided he was the next Gareth Bale we have seen a shadow of the player. An injury and then a series of performances where he was totally anonymous, not going into the opposition box, not making decisive passes meant he was dropped. It looked like he was saving himself for the World Cup and then came out and said he is lazy, too lazy to learn English.

Now with just a few games to go he appears to be trying again when it is too late, well too late for us but not for his World Cup dream.

The Italian club don't want to buy him however, they want to loan him for a season to see if he is any good before they would commit to any transfer. All that does is run down a year on his contract and reduce his sell-on value to us. A player is more expensive the longer his contract.

There seems little benefit to us especially as we will be having a new manager and he may want him. The report in Italian daily Il Tempo does rather confirm this saying we are not interested in a loan only a sale.

It looks highly unlikely that anything would come of it.
