Should we go for Damarai Gray in the summer?

TRANSFER TALK

If ever there was an example of how clubs scout then our continued watching of 20-year-old (21 in June) Damarai Gray even though he went to Leicester City last season instead of ourselves or anyone else.

Wilfried Zaha, Ross Barkley and Damarai Gray show we are interested in strengthening our attacking options, especially with Erik Lamela taking months to get over a minor hip injury, as it was described at the time.

Why we paid £30 million for a central midfielder we then play on the wing I don't know, mind you we did the same with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Christian Eriksen. Does that demonstrate football intelligence and players who can adapt as opposed to players who can't? The ability to play in several positions is integral to our off the movement based game. Each player has to know what to do in each position, Sissoko seems wasted on the wing.

Q - Why did he go to Leicester

Probably because he felt he could get regular football, they were in the UEFA Champions League and still are after the easiest of groups. He may have been fooled, like many were, that Leicester would be near the top of the table. Myself, I thought 12th was the best they would achieve. They are the only team to have won the league with such appalling statistics that went totally against the grain. There is no way that could happen twice. They concede too many shots and don't have enough of their own. Flash in the pan success is not what Tottenham are building, even though some supporters shout for it.

Ranieri said earlier in the season that Gray had a lot of improvement to do to become a regular starter.

"I believe in this player and believe he can have a good career. It is important he understands, tactically, that he can’t play alone. He has to link with other players."

Q - Does he score goals?

He has played 1,394 minutes for Leicester in all competitions and scored three goals and had five assists. In the Premier League he has played 716 minutes scoring one goal and having three assists.

He is young and has room to improve. He is another future player and not one for now, same as Georges-Kevin N'Koudou. There are only so many tomorrow players you can have. Do we need him in the summer or do we need more of the finished article?
