Posturing and the fake Simon fee

A Nigerian newspaper have claimed the Gent managed has slapped a £14.82-million (US$22.78m - AUS$31.14m - €15m) which has been taken as gospel by the Daily Express. Sounds much more like a guess from a newspaper who are unlikely to have the ear of the manager of a Belgian football club or posturing.

Nigerian Simon cost just £740,000 (US$1.14m - AUS$1.56m - €1m) from Slovakian side Trencin in January. The figure supposedly slapped on him is no one any club will take notice of. It is routine to suggest you wouldn't sell a player for under (insert inflated fee), but when push comes to shove much lower is accepted.

All clubs, Tottenham included, value players themselves, not just their own players, but any player they wish to purchase. We will determine what we think a player is worth, what we are willing to pay and what our initial offer will be, which will naturally be low. When clubs agree a figure in between the two valuations, one club wants to start the valuation from a high point and one from a low point.

Fans incorrectly assume that when a club mentions a figure that that is what the player is worth, in most cases they aren't, in most cases it is an inflated figure to try and get the accepted in between figure as high as possible. Fans then wrongly talk about an initial offer being insulting, it's just basic business negotiation, as is the posturing in the press.

A £15m figure may have been mentioned, but if he is sold it won't be for anywhere near that, he has done nothing to warrant it.
