Berahino mentally not right
As you will know by now Saido Berahino has been left out of the WBA squad for the game today against Chelsea, is a deal that bit nearer or is he mentally not right?
The word from WBA is that his head has been turned and he isn't mentally right for the game. I wrote a lot about mentality and the fact you have to be totally focused to trying to be the best you can be to give your best performance week in week out. The drive to be the best you can be and thus go as far as you can in the game is what separates the truly great from the rest. It's called a winning mentality.
Winning football games is a by-product of a winning mentality and strange as it may sound you don't acquire a winning mentality by simply winning football games, as I say that is merely a by-product, a healthy one.
Saido Berahino mentally is not in the right place to produce his best, his head is not at WBA, in his mind he has already left and is waiting for it to happen. If it falls through, and I'm sure the haggling is simply over the size of the guaranteed fee and add-ons, WBA want more guaranteed fee, we want more performance-related add-ons, then he will have to re-focus.
We saw last week he missed a chance he should have put away, all strikers miss of course, but they miss more often when their head isn't in it, when they are in the wrong frame of mind. A player has to be motivated to produce his best and that motivation comes from within, not a had coach or manager, that is merely a temporary lift.
At the moment Berahino is not motivated and his performance level therefore dips, it's something Spurs have been guilty of and while we are making progress with, still have a long way to go to gain the edge over others that we should be striving for.
