Yedlin gives Pochettino a problem

DeAndre Yedlin has created a problem at Spurs, a nice problem, but a problem all the same.

Signed from Seattle Sounders at the tender age of 21 he has left everything he knows and gone from a county where professional football is a minor sport to a country where we eat, drink and sleep it. He has moved to a different culture entirely, moved to a country where we are fanatical about the sport and he didn't just go to any team but straight into the top league and a top team.

No family, no friends, a strange city and a level of football he has not encountered every day.on the training ground. He has had to get his fitness levels up, is having to work on his technique, learn a new system, make friends and feel comfortable, feel at home, feel as if he belongs here. That can not be easy to achieve, he has stepped into the unknown.

The rumours coming out of Tottenham towards the end of the season were that he hadn't impressed in training, there were question marks and it was going to take longer before he was ready for the first team. The plan had been for him to be a part of the squad for next season, but Spurs have been watching alternative right-backs.

We have been linked, continually it seems, with Miguel Lopes of Sporting and at the end of the season it emerged we are trying to sign Kieran Trippier from Burnley. That would mean Yedlin either going out on loan or playing a very peripheral role.

He he was taken to Malaysia and Australia as part of the AIA Cup Squad and raised a few eyebrows. He looked good, he put in performances that were way ahead of his training ground performances. It's what you do on the training ground that gets you selected, but what Yedlin did in the two friendlies has now given Pochettinio a dilemma.

He has to relate those performances to the games he might play in next season. Does he continue to pursue Trippier or does he trust Yedlin? There will be 6 Europa League games to play.

West Ham United have to play in the first qualifying round on 2nd and 9th July, Southampton the third qualifying round on 30th July and 6th August but Spurs don't have to play until the group stages on 17th September, the Premier League season starts on 8th August.

You would expect Yedlin to play the games on:
31st August - 8th September - Internationals
17th September - EL
w/c 21st September - LC Round 3
1st October - EL
5th - 13th October - Internationals
22nd October - EL
w/c 26th October - LC Round 4
5th November - EL
9th - 17th November - Internationals
26th November - EL
w/c 30th November - LC Round 5
10th December - EL

Assuming passage in the League Cup that's 9 fixtures plus internationals so a decent amount of regular football in different countries, different cultures, it's a lot to experience when stepping up levels of football in a new country, especially one where football is the culture.

Pochrttino has to make the decision, having seen him in the two friendlies whether to bring in cover or not. What he does will determine what he thinks of Yedlin right now and how much developing he has to do before he feels he is ready.
