Is Obiang good enough?

Tottenham are continually linked with two types of defensive midfielder for good reason, we need to replace the more attack minded Paulinho and the more defensive minded Étienne Capoue, possibly Benjamin Stambouli as well.

Stambouli is not certain to leave, indeed he has said he wants to stay, Tottenham will listen to offers but if he stays he should improve next season into more of the players many think he can be. That still leaves two central midfield players to replace, one more defensive minded, one more attacking but sound defensively.

Many names are being thrown into the ring. Naturally we have different options for each position are negotiations will be under way with many parties on an ongoing basis. A player regularly linked with us this year is 23-year-old  (24 next March) Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang.

The Spanish Under-21 international is a right footed central midfielder and secondly a defensive midfielder suggesting he would replace Paulinho in the squad. Last season he played 23 games as a central midfielder, 5 on the left of midfield, 3 as a defensive midfielder and 1 on the right of midfield.

West Ham are known to be interested, as are Stoke City, but t has been reported the London club had agreed a £5.53 million (US$8.51m - AUS$10.99m - €7.5m) plus add-ons with Sampdoria.

How does he compare to his potential role rivals, Ryan Mason, Paulinho and Mousa Dembélé using league performance statistics?

His pass completion is above 80%, he passes forward in the way Mason does, considerably more than Paulinho or Dembele does but his key pass and creation statistics need improvement, suggesting a lot of safe passes.

The further up the field you go the more important it is to see a pass and if you are trying to thread a pass to create then you are taking a risk. Coaches look for players who are prepared to take a risk to create, they unlock defences more than the predictable approach. Fans will often moan at a player when they attempt a pass which doesn't come off nut if it is a creation pass and not simply a badly executed pass then they shouldn't be criticised.

His blocks, clearances and interception statistics suggest he does his fair share of defensive work and with a 79% success rate leads the way when taking on an opponent.

There are better options out there probably so I'll leave you with a skills video, it doesn't show him in the best light, he starts by telegraphing a pass which is intercepted, taking him out the game.
