Yedlin makes some telling observations

I have discussed having a winning mentality a lot. It's not about winning, although that is obviously a part of it, but it's about putting in the work required behind the scenes to be the best you can be and thus produce it on the field of play.

The burning desire for constant improvement is what separates the talented players from the top players, the talented ones who produce that talent regularly. You tend to fins those missing that vital extra element are inconsistent and that is solely down to mentality. I always recall Charlie Nicholas at Arsenal, a gifted footballer, but inconsistent, you never know which player would turn up. He could have been extra special.

At Tottenham we have Mousa Dembele, consistent yes, but with far more talent than he actually uses. he is an unfulfilled talent who should be one of the top players in the game. Alas he is happy where he is, content with his lot and doesn't improve, that is a mental weakness.

Gareth bale had the mental strength, h turned himself into the most expensive player in the world, he didn't do that by being happy with his lot. He had a goal to play for Real Madrid, to do that he had to make himself the best he could be. he did that on the training field and achieved his goal, that is mental strength, that is a winning mentality.

It is that sort of mentality of player we need to sign, indeed Daniel Levy says we need a game changer. Working with players to a greater extent mentally will produce more players capable of changing a game, more with a winning mentality, it's a no-brainer!

DeAndre Yedlin has given an exclusive interview to The Bleacher Report in which he made some telling remarks.

“I think that’s the one thing I really like about Jurgen. He trusts his young players, and he really gives them opportunities. I think it’s the same with Pochettino. That was another big factor in my decision to come here. I knew if I moved, I would get the opportunities if I earned them.”

It's the last four words that stand out, 'if I earn them'. He has moved country to improve and put himself under pressure, he has demonstrated the desire to improve but there was more that suggests he has the right mentality. His comments on Harry Kane are a case in point.

“He’s a brilliant player, and it’s been inspiring just to see every day how he works, how he prepares. He’s often the first one here, in the gym. He’ll do a session, wait two hours, then do another session, then do shooting practice. He’s so dedicated, and for a guy who’s so young, that makes you want to work harder. It makes you think, you know, ‘What can I do to get better?’ He’s definitely an encouraging presence and inspiration.”

'It makes you think, what can I do better' is exactly the mentality we need, that is a winning mentality. It shows Harry Kane has it, but then we knew that. Compare that with Emmanuel Adebayor for instance, when it came to learning something new in a new system, he went backwards and complained, along with a few others.

Paulinho, Kaboul, Capoue, have they improved on the training field? If they had they'd be playing. Tim Sherwood recognised they didn't have winning mentalities, the way Bentaleb has. He did what it took to get a chance to prove himself and has worked hard ever since. Sherwood told Levy that some players were not playing for the club they were playing for themselves. He was right and it's Pochettino who is now doing something about it, with Daniel Levy's backing.

Which mentality do you want at Spurs? Mentality makes a difference, it makes a huge difference. Adebayor has it all, top clubs have signed him because of it but he simply doesn't produce consistently enough. The talent doesn't suddenly disappear, it's still there, the reason is in his head. Paulinho can't be bothered to learn the language, his words, Kaboul and Capoue decided not to buy into what Pochettino is trying to achieve, they made excuses and complained.

Our policy is to sign young players who want to improve and who we want to improve. That shows that we are at least looking for players with the right mentality, the more with Kane and Yedlin's the better.
