Pochettino & Levy plan the way forward

Mauricio Pochettino has explained what supporters ought to know but often don't seem to, when they have an agenda, that a manager or head coach talks to a chairman and a course of action is agreed.

Pochettino & Levy plan the way forward

He understands constraints and that Tottenham do not simply have an open cheque book, he understands that spaces have to be created in the squad for new additions, he understands that room for non-home grown players need to be created.

It's far more important to get the right players with the right attitude than simply paying a big fee for a supposed star. As a coach you look for the root cause of a problem and solve that because if you don't then the problem will manifest itself again. Relating that to football, if the problem for instance is moving the ball forward from defence quickly or a lack of movement then simply changing a striker will only have minimum impact.

A striker can't score without service, whoever he is and it's only really lately that Tottenham have been creating chances in any great number. Previously simply buying another striker without solving the problems behind them wouldn't have made much difference. A developing Ryan Mason has been instrumental is moving the ball faster, it's no coincidence that we have improved with Etienne Capoue out of the side, he has been playing the game at his pace, too slow.

From there Pochettino has had to find the players who will follow him and those who will not buy 100% into his philosophies. That has taken trial and error in match conditions but now we are creating chances.

The next two windows will go a long way to determining our future. It is essential that players with the right attitude are added to the ones we have and those that have not totally bought into the Argentinians methods are moved on. Pochettino will have spoken to Daniel Levy and plans over January and summer transfer windows made.

“We have a lot of chats and have I told him all my thoughts,. We have common sense, when the window opens in January we will start to decide but so far we are very happy with our squad.
“I am happy, it’s not about if you sign or not. I’m happy here and I’m happy with our squad. I never put pressure (on the chairman).
“We need to understand in football, when you are a head coach you need to try to explain to the chairman, sporting director, my thoughts and advice and then decide the best for the team.”

Moving players on is not a simply task if there are no upward steps available to them and with bringing in players dependent upon clearing players everything is not going to be solved in January. A step in the right direction and a stronger Tottenham by the end of the window is the result we all hope for.
