Tottenham form a US partnership

USA is big business and Tottenham are determined to be at the forefront of growth in a untapped market to build a future fan base and maximise commercial opportunities.

The TV money NBC paid for the rights to show English Premier League (EPL) football trebled and thus far viewing figures have trebled. When Arsenal and Tottenham were playing at the same time recently on their respective pre-season tours Spurs pulled in over 30% more viewers.

The World Cup also helped to build football in the States and now Spurs have forged a youth football partnership to help develop football in the US at grassroots level.

The beautifully named Tallahassee United have changed their name to Tallahassee Tottenham Hotspur and are adopting our world renowned global coaching philosophy.

Few football clubs can have has a day named after them but Tottenham have, the Governing Body of the City proclaimed Wednesday July 30th, 2014, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Day.

A member of the Global Coaching team from Tottenham will now be based in Tallahassee providing full-time support to the team to develop and maintain the high standards Tottenham work towards. The individual will oversee player development and will use our brand philosophy of stylish, attacking football to build a plan around.

Tallahassee Tottenham Hotspur will play in the same kit that is worn by Spurs, which remembering back to my days as a kid would have been something special. Shirt sales have grown over the years and far more are sold today than used to be the case but children still like to wear their club colours.

Grant Cornwell MBE is the Head of Tottenham Hotspur Global Coaching and he outlined the philosophy of Tottenham towards global coaching and coaching in Tallahassee

"With our innovative programmes,we are creating pathways and opportunities for young players and coaches associated with Tallahassee.  
"Our Global Coaching team works across the world to develop young players and educate coaches, getting across a unique philosophy the Club has always prided itself on – attacking football played with style and flair.  
"This partnership is a real investment into the grassroots of US soccer and a fantastic opportunity for both organisations."

Alex Minton is the Director of Coaching for Tallahassee Tottenham Hotspur and he explained they wanted their coaches to learn from the best so that the children will gain maximum benefit.

“We are looking forward to continuing our philosophy of developing players by having access to coaching best practices and implementing Tottenham Hotspur’s philosophy.  
"We feel that investing in our coaches will result in helping our players develop to their fullest potential.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Global Coaching programme already has successful long-term partnerships in North America with soccer associations in California, Maryland and Texas. This new association in Florida stretches it across the country.

Some people doubt the strength of support for Tottenham in America but the club has more Official Supporters Clubs, 30, than any other Premier League team in America. An NBC poll showed Spurs to be the number one supported side and that was evident with big crowds wherever we went.

In Toronto for instance we had a full house, yet there were other games with overseas sides which were sparsely populated. Seattle drew 55,000 and it was a similar story in Chicago. Tottenham didn't just tour, they brought along the Global Coaching Team and undertook coaching in schools and clubs as grass roots level, as well as with the Special Olympics charity. 

The growing interest in Tottenham Hotspur was displayed by an audience of 383,000 viewers that watched the Club’s friendly with Chicago Fire on ESPN – the highest US television viewing figure out of all friendly matches played that weekend and Arsenal were playing New York Red Bulls at the time, which drew significantly less.

Robert Hosay is the  President of Tallahassee Tottenham Hotspur ans he was really excited by the benefits such a prestigious partnership would bring for the children.

“Our community is extremely excited about this partnership because it will help provide the highest quality training to all ages and all levels of players, as well as coaches.  
"Having Tottenham Hotspur, an English Premier League team, invest in this community, is going to provide an incredible springboard for youth soccer in the greater Tallahassee region.”

This partnership will see Tallahassee Tottenham Hotspur expanding access to football in the surrounding areas from the age of 4 upwards and access for players with any special needs. Such projects benefit the local community help to continue to build the Tottenham name in America.
