Confident, but not totally confident

It was back to the old ways, after being clinical against Celtic Spurs returned to finishing mediocrity.

Soldado, confident but not totally confident

Yet again at the end of a game when we should be banging in chances we half heartedly miss them. Towards the end we displayed it in abundance. Soldado put late substitute Ceballos through, it wasn't a great pass but just the keeper to beat, he saves it. From the same position Townsend completely missed the target. Then Ceballos in again and with the keeper coming out at him he tried to lob it over him, with vision a square pass and Soldado had an open goal.

A little incident but the difference between scoring and not scoring, playing for my glory or playing for the team glory.

The top sides are clinical, they bang in goals regularly, we create chances and miss regularly, then when we have the chance to practice finishing we fluff it, expecting to simply turn it on when we need it. That's not the mentality needed to win things. End product is all that counts, not looking good.

We should have scored 6, we scored 2.

There were certainly positives from the game, Danny Rose has arguably his best 45 minutes in a Spurs shirt at a time when his place is under threat, that takes character, perhaps the signing of Ben Davies is going to be the making of him, perhaps it's going to focus him into improving. He showed why the club offered him a five-year contract.

I spoke of Eric Dier in the video highlights article and gave mentions to a few who impressed but one not mentioned was Andros Townsend who certainly did some good things when he came on, he caused trouble created a great chance that Soldado missed and had a couple of shots saved, one of which Soldado scored from te rebound. On the downside, no goals. He was trough one on one on the goalkeeper on his strong left foot eight yards out and missed the target by  a distance.

He is coming back from injury and building his fitness, having worked hard even when doing his punditry stint for ITV at the World Cup. There will be inconsistency, he is young but even with the inconsistency it was probably the best game he has played for us this year.

Let's hope he can build on that 45 minutes, the talent is there, just a few issues to resolve.

Erik Lamela has grown in confidence and is confident, Soldado hasn't and isn't I would suggest on that performance. In all other aspects apart from goalscoring he is contributing and contributing well but goalscoring is still a struggle.

That 5 yard square ball from Ceballos right at the end instead of trying to chip the keeper himself could have really helped his confidence. He was in the right place at the right time as all good strikers should be and didn't get the ball. Arsenal were once criticised for passing the ball too much, for playing one pass too many, that was exactly what we needed to do, be aware and pass.

Two goals from open play rather than one, a bit of confidence, a bit more relaxed in front of goal and who knows, the goals might start to flow, in the meantime ticking along with goals will keep his confidence higher than it was last season. I'm sure a confident Soldado would have buried the two shot chances he had. He looks confident, but not totally confident.

A positive result, a positive performance from the side, just a few little thing to work on improving, it is the only way to constantly get better, finding the little things you can improve all the time.

Confident but not totally confident could actually rather sum up the game.
