Clubs should be deducted points
Professional Footballers' Association chief executive chief Gordon Taylor feels Harry Redknapp was wrong to make his comments but raises another issue that the inept FA do nothing about.
When asked for his comments on Redknapp's claim that several Spurs players didn't want to play for England (presumably only in friendlies) he diplomatically felt it was mischievous.
He claimed it was more than one Gordon.
Now that is the important point in what he says. Playing for your country is the pinnacle and no player should ever be refused to opportunity to do so. Why sign an Afircan player for instance and then try to convince him not to play in the Africa Cup of Nations? You know he is going to be going there so you accept that or you don't sign him, you don't sign him and then complain it's not fair.
No club should ever have a say in whether a player can turn up for international duty or how much they play. After yet another inept World Cup performance, the worst ever by an England team, it's about time Premier League clubs were told you do not run the game in this country.

If a club try in any way to prevent a player playing for their country then they should be deducted points. It's a disgrace that Ryan Giggs never played an international friendly or that Gareth Bale missed a recent pre World Cup friendly citing an injury. He was OK to go on a personal money making trip to Asia but it wouldn't be the first time he has faked an injury, if that is what he did.
Exactly the point Tim Sherwood was making and why he couldn't pick certain players all the time. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, even Wayne Rooney have taken a lot of stick over the years, but at least they have a pride in representing their country.
It's a shame when a club like Manchester United ruin England players while developing foreign players. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are two prime examples and there no no bigger example than 'Jack of all trades, master of none, Wayne Rooney.
While Ronaldo developed because he refused to spent time defensively, Wayne Rooney stopped developing because he was moved to do the work Ronaldo wouldn't. Now one has just been crowned the best player in the world and the other continues to put in poor performances for his country, who do exactly what Manchester United do, move him from pillar to post.

“I know Harry, I admire Harry, and I don’t know in what context he’s said it, I’m perfectly happy to talk to him about it, he’s a football man and it may have come from one particular player for some special reason."

“It’s a little bit mischievous to throw out grenades like that at the end of a World Cup disappointment. I think we all have to get focused and move on.
“I don’t know of any youngsters who have done that. I do know at times there is pressure from managers for players not to go because they’ve got big games.
“They were saying that players were injured - this came from the manager not the player - and this is one of the reasons they (players) have to turn up for England and be examined by the doctor because I can tell you, far from it being the players, there have been more players pulled out of England by managers rather than by the players themselves."

“I don’t think it helps to stir up such things at this time now when everybody is disappointed that we are no longer at the World Cup party.
“I think that we should be focusing on getting a team out there and salvaging some pride against Costa Rica. But it’s what makes the world go round. I do feel it’s unfortunate but I think most people in the game or any player in the game would say any chance to play for England, they’d carry their bags around the world.
“It’s a manager knowing his players and I would say with Roy Hodgson, in fact virtually every manager I know, they know who’ll go through brick walls for them and who won’t.”
