Tell any Spurs fan they need a new left-back and you'll hardly hear a murmur of disagreement. Danny Rose is learning, has attacking qualities, has pace, but lacks defensively, as so many full-backs do these days.

Leighton Baines is a prime example, brilliant going forward in Everton's system but weak when having to defend and gets torn apart by a decent winger at international level. Tottenham have been searching for a youngster that has a bit of both, offers going forward but can defend as well.

The left-back settled upon is Swansea City's 21 year-old Ben Davies. The club have contacted Swansea and offered £8 million for the Welsh international who has 71 games for Swansea under his belt.

He creates more chances, has a far better passing accuracy, plays shorter passes, makes less errors, is better in the air, fouls his opponent less often.

That would all suggest he doesn't make so many rash decisions, which would indicate he possibly has better concentration levels.

Davies was a player Tottenham watched extensively last season and was a player Daniel Levy and Franco Baldini suggested to Mauricio Pochettino during their meeting shortly after he was appointed Head Coach. As an added advantage he has Premier League experience and is homegrown qualified which would allow us to let one of our other homegrown qualified players go.

It seems the Argentinian has now done his homework and agreed we should try and sign him before Manchester City or Atlético Madrid firm up their interest.

  1. So, after identifying so many reasons why Davies offers a better option at left back than Rose, do you think a bid of £8m is (a) meaningful or (b) derisory? Please consider the recent transfer of Luke Shaw to Manchester United when answering.
  2. Adding to the person's comment above, as a benchmark, how much would you expect as a fee if you sold a) Danny Rose or b) Kyle Walker?
  3. The exorbident figure for Luke Shaw, a figure he isn't worth at this time, doesn't make Davies any more expensive. Gareth Bale was sold for a world record fee, does that mean every decent midfielder is now worth £60 million?

    Kyle Walker is a superior player to Davies, a former Young Player of the Year, an award Davies hasn't managed to achieve, plus he is of course a right-back and on a longer contract (2019). The longer the contract the more expensive it makes a player, the shorter the contract the cheaper they become. Danny Rose would be the better player to compare against so in answer to your question £6 million tops.

Buying a player is a question of haggling, a club puts an inflated figure on a player and the buying club offer a lower figure with hope to meet somewhere in between, The Daily Mail report the fee offered is £6 million, Swansea may have a figure of £12m in mind, Spurs valuation may be £8 or £9m. If he is more expensive then there are other options out there.
  5. I'd suggest you start lining up some of those alternatives then and accept you miss out on the home grown option
  6. In a years time he'll be cheaper with only a year left on his contract which he could run down and leave for free so Swansea would be forced to sell at a reduced rate. Agents only have to remind clubs of that and can force their client out the door. I'm not suggesting that is going to happen or should happen but then neither am I fussed whether Davies signs or not. For me he lacks the pace the role requires at the top level.
