Sherwood - Players need to give 100%
Tim Sherwood has given an injury update on the Spurs squad, just as some come back others seem to get injured.
“Obviously Soldado and Vertonghen were carried off at Anfield so they won’t be fit."
I seem to recall Jan Vertonghen walking off quite happily, limping when the physio had a word in his ear and then giving up on that and strolling off normally. Not a stretcher in sight.
“I have not had an update but they won’t be available for this weekend. Younes has had another week’s training so we’re happy with him. Adebayor has been training so he’s up for selection. There’s a chance he could start. He’s done a week’s training so he’s got enough time under his belt. He won’t be 100 per cent but he’s quite good at 70 per cent.
“You’re obviously going to miss a player of his quality but he’s looked good, we’re happy with what he’s produced this week."
With Soldado out and the only other striking option being Harry Kane it is likely that Adebator will start with Kane coming for for the last 20 minutes. Sherwood has given Kane a few cameo performances and even started with him against Benfica. He was instrumental in transforming the game in the away leg against the Portuguese with his aerial ability and this game provides another opportunity to give him some game time.
“Chiriches has come through an Under-21 game last week so he’s got some minutes under his belt and he’s up for selection.
“Paulinho will be back in the squad after missing out last week through conjunctivitis. It’s not too bad.
“You have to kick on and move on, you can’t dwell on it too long, as much as the scars will always be there from the heavy defeats we’ve received this season.
“It’s about moving on to the next one and, between now and the end of the season, we have to make sure we play with pride and give the great fans that Tottenham have 100 per cent all of the time."
Surely that should have been happening already, surely that should have been happening after one of our previous heavy defeats. It's a bit late to start playing with pride now.
“They shouldn’t need anyone to motivate them. I never needed motivating to play football. If you need motivating then you shouldn’t be in this game. You’ve got 35,000 fans coming to cheer you on.
“It’s all about pride now and getting the maximum points possible between now and the end of the season."
The trouble is some of the players don't have any pride and some are just not good enough. It is down to the individual player to decide if he is motivated or not so in that respect I agree with Sherwood. If what he is doing doesn't motivate then it's down to the individual and you can see that some of them are motivated, the like of Vertonghen choose not to be.
There is little that can be done about the poor players though, as we have nobody to take over from Kyle Naughton and just the inexperienced Zeki Fryers to replace Danny Rose.
“We’ve got to play with the shackles off. We’re not coming up against a technical mismatch now, against teams in the top four. We’re playing against teams who are in and around mid-table or below that, so we really have to play with a lot of freedom and try to entertain these great fans that we have."
With the fans having turned against him and a performance with hardly any effort it is not surprising that Sherwood is now praising the Spurs fans. Admitting his management is a technical mismatch with Brendon Rogers is not something he would have done back in January so it seems he has realised the role is not as easy as it appears.
“Could I see Gus [Poyet] going into management? I probably could. He was a leader of men," continued Sherwood who played in the same Spurs side as the Sunderland boss during their playing days.
“Could he see me going into management? He’d probably say he could. It’s no surprise that we are both in the hot-seat and I think he has done a very good job wherever he has been.
“I’m hoping for his sake that Sunderland can remain in the division, but unfortunately for him I don’t want it to start on Monday night. If their spirit can mirror their manager, then they will certainly be going until they have no breath left in them. That gives them a real opportunity."
Sherwood himself had drive, passion, motivation in his playing days which has not transferred itself to the team so passion in a boss is not always mirrored in their sides.
“They haven’t been fantastic - their results have suggested that, but we really have to worry about ourselves.”
Quite frankly instead of talking about Sunderland he could have been talking about his own Spurs team. We haven't been fantastic either.
