FA to punish simulation retrospectively

A long campaign to get retrospective punishment for diving finally bears fruit! Well done the , brilliant news! COME ON!!! 👍🏼

It's a step Stan, but it isn't an easy one. If a player drags a leg to get caught then technically he isn't diving and a panel would have to prove he has beyond any doubt to enforce a penalty as they could be sued for defamation of character.

If a player does a belly flop like Georginio Wijnaldum did for Newcastle United at the end of last season against Spurs, then yes a retrospective ban should be enforced. What happens to the goal though when he has been found to be cheating, should that get struck off as well and the result amended if necessary.

That takes us into another legal minefield where results could be disputed, given the game is all about money these days. Diving to get a penalty can and does change the course of a game, which can have serious financial consequences through qualification for Europe, trophy winning or relegation.

A player who dives in the FA Cup against non-league opposition to change the course or outcome of a game is depriving that side of years of financial stability. A mere ban is hardly a just punishment in those circumstances, the non-league side are still being penalised for doing nothing wrong.

We need video to help referees and linemen to get decisions right, but if some referees don't know that you can't be offside in your own half.

There are going to have to be very strict guidelines as to what is simulation and what isn't. Good news, but a minefield.
