Lukaku just a backup option for Manchester United

TRANSFER TALK

If we know what players are doing and what deals they might be negotiating then we can narrow down our list of potential purchases and with that in mind there is news that Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has met Romelu Lukaku's agent Mino Raiola for transfer talks in The Lowry Hotel in Manchester.

Manchester United would seem a sensible move for him with Zlatan Ibrahimovic being a 35-year-old (36 in October) and having just a one-year contract extension option. There is a place waiting for a new first-choice striker and he'll be able to earn the wages he wants, in excess of £100,000-a-week easily at Old Trafford.

There is little likelihood that he would want to come to Spurs and play second fiddle to Harry Kane so it would require another adjustment to our system to see him at White Hart Lane. While the press continue to link us, it seems to me to be no more than speculation as there seems little benefit in such a move for Lukaku himself.

All may not be what it seems though as Miguel Delaney, ho writes for the Independent, believes that Lukaku is not a top priority on Jose Mourinho's shopping list. In which case the meeting will have been to discuss the potential of a move if Jose Mourinho's main targets don't come to fruition.

Players are sounded out in this way all the time so clubs know where they stand, who might be available and who might be going where. It also means that a player who wants a big move to a major club will then often wait for developments and not sign for anybody else until he knows his big club move is definitely not on.
