Victor Wanyama Spurs defensive rock

Victor Wanyama for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this season:
Most interceptions (30)
Most tackles won (65)
Most fouls (48)

His influence can be seen from the stats of his last game, the 1-0 Premier League win over Middlesbrough at the weekend. 109 touches is a vast amount.

We marvelled at Eric Dier last season playing the role but he has hardly had a look in this season with Victor Wanyama upping his game amongst better players and having his mentality right. It appeared in his final season at Southampton, he went through the motions, got himself sent off and even refused to play because he was refused a move to Spurs.

We have seen a similar sort of thing with Saido Berahino who downed tools at WBA. Wanyama has been a revelation and instead of having the lightweight midfield we used to have, we now have steel and power in the shape of Wanyama and Dembele.

The form a formidable pair with Dembele having licence to roam forward and link both wings into the attack while Wanyama sits as does the defensive work. He still finds time to get into the box as his missed header against Sunderland showed. With his aerial ability perhaps he should have done better with that chance.

He'll need to be on top of his game again at the weekend when we face Liverpool at Anfield.
