Spurs to meet Chelsea in semi-finals

Tottenham Hotspur will meet defending champions and fellow London side Chelsea in the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup.

The top two teams in the Premier League will meet at youth level after our youngsters despatched Newcastle United in an entertaining game at St James' Park last night that ended 5-3.

Keanan Bennetts, an English-born Nigerian winger, gave Spurs the lead after just 3 minutes when he cut in from wide on the right and fired a left-footed shot inside the near post. Reo Griffiths put us 2-0 up in front of 2.800 fans before Newcastle brought themselves back into the game through Lewis McNall converting from the penalty spot.

England youth international Bennetts had further chances before he had to go off injured and was replaced by Kazaiah Sterling, who scored his 6th goal in the competition to take us back into a two-goal lead at 2-1. That was pegged back to 3-2 when McNall netted his second goal of the game for Newcastle after 83 minutes.

That looked to have set up a grandstand finish and you could say three further goals in the remaining seven minutes provided it.

Spurs centre-half Japhet Tanganga made it 4-2 from a corner, Owen Gallagher immediately scored to bring it to 4-3. Brandon Austin then made a fine save tipping a McNall hat-trick effort around the post to prevent Newcastle levelling the scores and taking the tie into extra-time. Before the final whistle though, there was just enough time for substitute Dylan Duncan to curl one home to finally settle the tie 5-3.
