Brazilian-based journalist Felipe Mekhitarian reports that Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Sao Paulo striker Jonathan Calleri, who was being courted by clubs in Spain, Portugal, Italy and the Premier League.
He says that Guillermo Calleri – the player’s father and agent – has told the Sao Paulo board and told them hi son is leaving in the summer.
The problem with South American deals in third party owners and Calleri has them, but his contract ends 30 May. He is owned by an investment company so he'll have to be bought from them. Calleri will also be granted an Italian passport this summer – he qualifies via his grandparents so a work permit isn't an issue.
The 22-year-old (23 in September) made his name playing for Boca Juniors, was then sold in January 2016 to Uruguayan side Deportivo for £8.25 million before going on loan to Sao Paulo the very next day for £750,000. Since then he has scored 8 goals in 10 Libertadores games. In 2015 he scored 21 goals and had 11 assists in 53 games for Boca Juniors.
You have to laugh when some fans say they have never heard of him, none of them will follow South American football so why would they have heard of him. It doesn't make a player useless simply because you haven't heard of them.
Is the story true, who knows. There have been plenty of stories saying Pochettino has recommended him and that he wants him so that makes it possible. On the other side of the coin information from South America is often not reliable.
It's one I wouldn't mind seeing happen, there are plenty of decent strikers that come out of South America and plenty of decent players who come out of Boca Juniors.

Looks like good competition/cover for the number 9 role. Hopefully with Batshuayi or Berardi also in the mix.
