Complacency is the enemy

People place too much on one player. When Dembele was injured, Twitter and forums start spewing how great a loss he is. Yes, he's a loss but he was absent earlier in the season, he isn't irreplaceable and anyone who remembers back to the defeat of Arsenal at White Hart Lane last season won't be concerned at all.

Why? Because Ryan Mason was everywhere is that game, making tackles all over the pitch, he was immense. Club captain Hugo Lloris has praised him and held him up as an example of the mentality you need at Spurs now. Gone is the weak mentality, in comes the strong mind. Mason, you will recall, could have left the club but wanted to stay and fight for a place, which is great if you have the right mentality to do so. Andros Townsend wanted to do the same thing, but he didn't want to adapt to the team requirements, he appeared to want personal glory. That, of course, comes if you are excelling within the team environment, not being detrimental to it.

With the injuries he has had he is fresh, as is Bentaleb, which may be beneficial to us in the final few months of the season. It won't be long before Clinton Njie is back either, another who will be fresh. I have said many times that having a winning mentality is not just about trying to win football matches, it is about the work ethic in training every day, the desire, the commitment.

Not all players seem to grasp that training is where you have to shine, the reward is a game of football. Being picked to play is a prize that has to be earned, so why wouldn't you do everything you could to improve past your rival teammates? If they are striving to improve then you push each other. During periods of war, the advances in technology are greater than at times of peace. The Second World War saw dramatic technological change. Germany control Europe financially now so have achieved what they fought two World wars for.

Tottenham have seen dramatic change this season, the step to the next level was a big one, results suggest we have made that leap, but we can't rest, we must continue to strive to improve, as we will. The squad will be added to in the summer, there will be departures and Alex Pritchard will start afresh, Josh Onomah will be a year older with some experience under his belt.

These guys will be pushing the players who are already there ensuring there is no complacency. A squad where players ar guaranteed a start raises the possibility of complacency. If you want to win something complacency is the enemy, the enemy who must be defeated.
