Bentaleb hopes for his chance
Nabil Bentaleb has become somewhat of a forgotten man at Spurs. He started the season but produced a horrendous pass to gift Manchester United a goal and victory in the season opener at Old Trafford. Soon after he was on the subs bench and then an injury from which he has never really returned to the fore.
Others have taken their chance, especially Dier so that Bentaleb and Mason have had to play only minor roles. Tom Carroll is now out for approximately 10 days so his place will need to be covered and 21-year-old Bentaleb will be hoping he gets his chance after not making the bench against Fiorentina. It would allow Pochettino to field a fresh player and should allow him to rest Dembele or Dier for the return leg against Fiorentina on Wednesday.
A month ago Pochettino was asked by the media about Bentaleb and he said he still had a future at White Hart Lane. That will come into question if he doesn't start either of the next two games.
"From the beginning, he had a problem. He missed 17 or 18 games with re-injury. The team moved on and another player had the opportunity to play.
"But we keep a very good relationship with Nabil and be sure that, if he works like he works in the last few weeks, he will have the possibility to play. It's always about a football decision, and performance."
He perhaps makes too many twists and turns, excellent when it gets him put of trouble but sometimes he tries to do just that little bit too much when releasing the ball quicker would be better for the team. Last season Pochettino asked him to work on his passing so he will be hoping to see evidence of improvement from the Algerian if he gives him the nod to play.
