5 teams getting preferential treatment

The draw has been made and there are some very interesting ties in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.

Manchester United, who shouldn't even be in the competition as far as the majority of football supporters are concerned and who had a scare against the weakest team left in the last round, will play Liverpool while Gary Neville's Valencia, who have now won their last four games, will play fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao.

There are just 6 of the 12 group stage winners left and 5 runners-up, the remaining 5 sides are the losers from another competition, placed into this one to try and guarantee them extra revenue at the expense of someone else. Just the sort of preferential treatment the Barcelona president approves of.

  • Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) vs Anderlecht (Belgium)
  • Basel (Switzerland) vs Sevilla (Spain)
  • Villarreal (Spain) vs Bayer Leverkusen (Germany)
  • Athletic Bilbao (Spain) vs Valencia (Spain)
  • Liverpool (England) vs Manchester United (England)
  • Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) vs Lazio (Italy)
  • Borussia Dortmund (Germany) vs Tottenham Hotspur (England)
  • Fenerbahce (Turkey) vs Braga (Portugal)

The UEFA Champions League losers getting that preferential treatment are:

  • Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
  • Manchester United (England)
  • Sevilla (Spain)
  • Bayer Leverkusen (Germany)
  • Valencia (Spain)

Tottenham have the away leg first on Thursday 10 March which Dele Alli will miss after his utterly ridiculous booking for the non-commital of any offence. The referee, who was utterly useless, along with his fellow officials, obviously wanted to book Alli as Fiorentina players were going down when touched and none of them were booked. No consistency, no fairness.

Nothing that can be done about it though so one we must go. Plenty of squad players to cover for him and it gives a chance for someone else to step up to the plate, important when you have a squad to rotate. The second leg will take place a week later. on Thursday 17 March.

We play Arsenal on Saturday 5 March at 12:45 GMT giving a nice rest before the first leg. Dele Alli will be able to rest for the Aston Villa tie on Sunday 13 March before the second leg. Following that leg, we play Bournemouth.
