Spurs around 90 passes short of a Premier League title

In the previous article, we looked at passing into the box success ratios on a for and against basis for each team. Tottenham we saw didn't fare too well suggesting it is an area where we can make significant improvements.

Next we need to look at what percentage of passes into the box create chances. The first table below shows the total number of passes made into the box vs the total number the opposition play into the box. The third figure is a plus or minus, Chelsea made 223 more passes into the opposition box than they conceded into theirs while Newcastle United had a deficit of 203.

The figures suggest there is nothing wrong at Chelsea and that now the players have got rid of Mourinho they will return to scoring goals. Three against Crystal Palace suggests that has started.

Passes into the box For vs Against

  • Chelsea 488 vs 265 = 223
  • Arsenal 529 vs 311 = 218
  • Liverpool 494 vs 303 = 191
  • Manchester City 402 vs 245 = 156
  • Manchester United 398 vs 248 = 150
  • Southampton 396 vs 295 = 101
  • Tottenham Hotspur 247 vs 282 = 65
  • Bournemouth 348 vs 316 = 32
  • League Average 341 vs 341 = 0
  • Everton 360 vs 356 = -4
  • Watford 317 vs 352 = -35
  • Swansea City 284 vs 328 = -44
  • Leicester City 284 vs 351 = -57
  • Crystal Palace 328 vs 398 = -70
  • WBA 276 vs 360 = -84
  • Sunderland 314 vs 409 = -95
  • West Ham United 287 vs 389 = -102
  • Aston Villa 241 vs 368 = -127
  • Norwich City 257 vs 393 = -136
  • Stoke City 247 vs 424 = -177
  • Newcastle United 226 vs 429 = -203

Those statistics are attempted passes and we have looked at their success rate as a percentage in a previous article. Below is a look at how successful those passes into the box were, again on a for and against basis. The table shows we still have a lot of work to do to match the sides usually in the top four places.

Successful passes into the box For vs Against

  • Chelsea 186 vs 88 = 98
  • Manchester City 158 vs 63 = 95
  • Arsenal 198 vs 112 = 86
  • Liverpool 158 vs 77 = 81
  • Manchester United 119 vs 75 = 44
  • Southampton123 vs 84 = 39
  • Bournemouth 124 vs 97 = 27
  • League Average 106 vs 106 = 0
  • Tottenham Hotspur 91 vs 93 = -2
  • Watford 81 vs 96 = -15
  • Everton 115 vs 131 = -16
  • Leicester City 85 vs 101 = -16
  • Swansea City 71 vs 92 = -21
  • WBA 81 vs 107 = -26
  • Crystal Palace 106 vs 136 = -30
  • Norwich City 85 vs 115 = -30
  • Aston Villa 71 vs 110 = -39
  • West Ham United 79 vs 121 = -42
  • Sunderland 69 vs 135 = -66
  • Stoke City 73 vs 141 = -68
  • Newcastle United 56 vs 155 = -99

The figures would suggest we are not creative enough around the box and rather support an article awhile ago raising questions about Christian Eriksen and is he doing enough. A team should never rest on their laurels and it seems clear from the statistics that the three behind Harry Kane need to up their game further while we also need to cut off supply lines into our box.

When Erik Lamela wasn't performing he wasn't getting into the box and when Nacer Chadli was on the left last season he was getting into the box. This season is seeing Lamela get into the box but nor Eriksen from the left. Good players as they may be it does suggest that we are where we are despite the balance of the team.
