Crystal Palace 1st, Spurs 2nd, Man City 20th

The last article looked at goals for and against from set pieces and we can, therefore, work out how efficient a side is from set-pieces and how inefficient. In other words, how often a side are going to score and how often they are going to concede in percentage terms which a comparison them against each other.

The first table shows goals for divided by shots for registered as a percentage, thus, we score from set-pieces 13.6% of the time.

You'll remember Tottenham have scored the most goals from set-pieces but only have the 6th highest number of attempts, so these figures demonstrate we are the most efficient team for scoring from set-pieces in the Premier League at the moment. That is quite a change from the pre-Bale era when we were utterly hopeless from free-kicks.

We can see that we will have to be vigilant when we play Sunderland under Sam Allardyce on 16 January.

  • Tottenham 13.6
  • Sunderland 12.9
  • Chelsea 12.9
  • WBA 12.3
  • Arsenal 11.3
  • Southampton 10.7
  • Norwich City 10.5
  • Crystal Palace 9.7
  • Manchester City 9.6
  • Newcastle United 8.5
  • Aston Villa 8.1
  • Bournemouth 8.1

  • Stoke City 6.3
  • Watford 6.0
  • Everton 5.3
  • Liverpool 5.3
  • Leicester City 4.3
  • Swansea City 3.7

Next we'll see who good teams are defensively from set-pieces by using goals aginst divided by shots against, again registered as a percentage. Tottenham concede a goal 3.4% of the time from set pieces while, as we have seen, we score a goal 13.6% of the time. Crystal Palace top the defensive table having not yet conceded a goal from set-pieces. Surprisingly, Manchester City are the worse team in the league defending set-pieces.

  • Crystal Palace 0.0
  • Tottenham 3.4
  • West Ham United 3.5
  • WBA 6.3
