Aston Villa experience a lesson to fans
A look at the league table over the past 5 seasons for teams ever-present in the Premier League, of which there are only 12, shows us as you would expect in 5th place. We are the 6th richest club in the Premier League and have a smattering who call for Daniel Levy's head.
The 7th richest club is Newcastle United who are persistently around the relegation zone and average 21.2 points less than us per season. That would suggest Spurs are better managed than Newcastle, both on and off the field. Aston Villa are the interesting club though.
In 1981/82 they won the European Cup, now of course renamed the UEFA Champions League and they were not a small club. Younger readers may not know they have traditionally been a big club and when the Cleveland Browns owner (American NFL side), Randy Lerner, bought a controlling interest for £62,6-million the club were optimistic.
However, a rich owner did not mean cash investment as it turned out and Villa now look certain to be relegated to the Championship while Lerner has the club up for sale. He put it up for sale in 2014 wanting £200-million. Aston Villa and Newcastle United show the reality of football ownership so fans should be very careful what they wish for. Investment only happens if a club is bought almost as someone's play thing.
As we can all see the future is bright at Tottenham and changing ownership makes little sense without guarantees. Compared with others we are doing very well thank-you. They were our equals but the club has been built to take us to a different level, we now see the upper level in our sights. There can't be a fan who can't see we are on course, whether they care to admit it or not.
