A rare big fixture for Colchester will motivate

The fourth round of the FA Cup takes place this weekend and that of course means Manchester United on the box, the TV companies showing every domestic cup tie of theirs every season, regardless of the opposition.

A more important tie takes place at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, League One side Colchester United taking on Premier Lague Tottenham Hotspur. This game is also televised, it will be on BT Sport, firstly previewed on the Fletch & Sav show and then the game live with guest pundits Owen Hargreaves, Glenn Hoddle and Sam Walker (injured Colchester goalkeeper).

Colchester are bottom of League One at the moment having amassed 22 points from 28 games, but this is the FA Cup and such matters go out of the window with sides motivated to perform their own spot of giant killing. Their vice-captain Alex Gilbey is an Arsenal fan so he will certainly be motivated and the fact that it is a rare occurrence for Colchester to get drawn against a major side will have the whole area buzzing. This is the type of glamour tie lower league chairman want, especially playing at home and at the minute there is hardly a more glamorous tie. We are the team being talked about by the media and TV pundits in glowing terms.

They haven't been beyond the First Round of the League Cup since 2010/11 when they lost to Sunderland in the second round. The last 11 years has seen them make it to Round Two only twice. This is the first time since 2005/06 that they have made it beyond the Third Round of the FA Cup. In that year they went out to Chelsea.

A roll call of their recent history demonstrates why this game will be hugely anticipated locally.
2015/16 Fourth Round - Tottenham Hotspur
2014/15 Third Round - Cardiff City
2013/14 First Round - Sheffield United
2012/13 First Round - Chelmsford City
2011/12 Second Round - Swindon Town
2010/11 Third Round - Swansea City (then a Championship side)
2009/10 Third Round - Preston North End
2008/09 First Round - Leyton Orient
2007/08 Third Round - Peterborough United
2006/07 Third Round - Barnet
2005/06 Last 16 - Chelsea
2004/05 Fouth Round - Blackburn Rovers
2003/04 Last 16 - Sheffield United
2002/03 Second Round - Leyton Orient

Games like this have to be taken the same as every other game, with the same motivation and dedication to achieving the team objective, a trip to the next round. Our victory over Leicester City opens up an opportunity as you never know who you are going to be drawn against, sometimes teams get a fairly easy route to the final, sometimes tough, it's the beauty of the competition.
