Paul Mitchell scouts winger

Tottenham have been regularly sending talent-spotters to Birmingham to keep tabs on teenage talent Demarai Gray. While there are not stories each week he is being watched every week, be it in person or via video after the game.

We had a scout at Bolton back on 20 October as Birmingham beat them 1-0 away from home and on 5 December Paul Mitchell went to see him play against Huddersfield, Birmingham lost 2-0 at home.

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has called 19-year-old (20 nxt June) Gray, who has been watched by Bayern Munich, as “probably the best young player in the country”. Naturally all the top clubs are watching him and latest reports are that Southampton are taking a keen interest sending their top scout, Ronald Koeman's brother to see him. Bournemouth and Leicester City have recently been mentioned as wanting to buy him also while Liverpool sent one of their scouts, Barry Hunter, to watch him against Huddersfield, where both he and Mitchel watched young left-back Ben Chilwell as well.

Valuing him is difficult, the £7.5-million figure has been mentioned, but then last year Birmingham were talking stupid £20-million figures, the latest is £3.75-million. Potential is just that, potential, you don't pay for it as if it has happened. You pay a fee that acknowledges a player has potential, but then you cover yourself by including stages of add-ons so if he starts to fulfill his potential he cost more if he doesn't he doesn't cost more. It's basic common sense, quite why WBA chairman Jeremy Peace gets upset with common sense over Berahino is a mystery.

Birmingham will naturally want as much as they can get, what the fee for a right-footed left winger who has scored one goal and had one assist in 24 games is I don't know.
