Spurs striker target breaks record

Tottenham have been scouting at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and have already made contact with Ultimate Stars Academy, the club of 16-year-old Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

There are reports that a Premier League club have offered £1-million (US$1.50m - AUS$2.14m - €1.4m) and additional reports saying we have made contact to begin discussions. Putting two and two together would suggest the offer is from us, but there is no confirmation of that.

Nigeria became only the second side to retain the FIFA Under-17 World Cup by beating Mali 2-0 and Osimhen notched his 10th goal of the tournament in his 7th game beating the record of 9 previously held by Frenchman Florent Sinama Pongolle, who achieved the feat in Trinidad & Tobago in 2001 (6 games) and Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly who matched it in Mexico in 2011 (4 games).

Coulibaly has been at Tottenham of course and not made the breakthrough, he was sold to Bari who loaned him immediately to Pistone and then he appeared as a Peterborough United player this season after a trial with them.Florent Sinama Pongolle scored 10 goals in 72 appearances in England. In 2012 he joined Russian side Rostov and scored one goal in 11 games, he scored one goal in 11 games the next season, then one goal in 7 MLS games for Chicago Fire in 2014 before joining Lausanne Sport in Switzerland. He has scored 17 goals since 2008. He and Coulibaly demonstrate that success at youth level does not guarantee success at senior level.

All you can do is buy the best and develop them, at the end of the day their development is up to them and their mentality. Youth are not always the most responsible, some think they have made it and stagnate, others go on. It depends upon their character, their mental make-up. Harry Kane didn't just arrive as a quality striker, he had finishing ability and it has taken a lot of hard work from him and the club to get to where he is. To get better that work has to go on.

the video below is highlights from the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup Final in Chile. Victor Osimhen is the number 9 in green and his record breaking 10th tournament goal is a copy of Harry Kane scoring against Aston Villa.
