How the Euro Championships may affect Spurs

Now the teams have been decided for the European Championships in France next summer, how are Spurs going to be affected?

We have seen this season there is a difficulty when players do not get sufficient rest during the summer. It is even worse for players like Harry Kane who was playing at the European Under-21 Championships last summer as he will have played a full season, a major tournament, a full season, a major tournament and then go into another full season.

Burn out, fatigue are all issues that come into play. Jan Vertonghen is reporting a groin injury because he has hardly had a rest this season so far and has just played 3 games in 6 days before the international break. Footballers are their own worst enemies though as they want to play every minute of every game.

Vertonghen had agreed he would be substituted after 70 minutes of the recent Belgium Italy international, but he didn't want to come off so his national manager let him stay on. It was not a competitive fixture and the sub was annoyed he didn't get on. His national manager was being weak, he should have simply taken him off regardless and protected the player. Groin injuries need rest so he was risking further injury by keeping him on. It is hardly surprising there is a conflict between club and country when this happens.

I'm all for players playing for their country, but that has to be sensibly managed in friendly games for established internationals, you are not going to be learning something new about them and they are hardly going to be learning anything new either. The risks outweigh the minimal benefit.

Apart from the list below, other players will no doubt hope to force their way into the international scene the way Dele Alli is doing now. There are reports Andros Townsend wants to move to get football so he doesn't miss the European Championships, but if he had the right mental attitude he would be improving and taking his chance at Tottenham when given it to make the position his own, he hasn't though.
