Europa League not affecting Spurs

There is always plenty of talk of how the UEFA Europa League affects clubs in their domestic leagues with the travelling and lack of recovery time having to play a factor.

This week Tottenham have a near 5,000 mile trip to Azerbaijan with 6 hours flying time plus the associated travelling and waiting time that goes with it. Our weekend opponents, Chelsea, played on Tuesday and have a significant rest and training advantage.

Tottenham are one of only three teams from the Top 5 European leagues (England, Spain, Italy, Germany & France) who currently top their UEFA Europa League group and are in the top five of their domestic league. The other two are Borussia Dortmund (Germany) top Group C and are 2nd in the Bundesliga, Napoli (Italy) top Group D and are 2nd in Serie A.

Group A - Molde (Norway) finished 6th of 15
Group B - Sion (Switzerland) 6th of 10
Group C - Borussia Dortmund (Germany) 2nd of 18
Group D - Napoli (Italy) 2nd of 20
Group E - Rapid Vienna (Austria) 3rd of 10
Group F - Braga (Portugal) 3rd of 18
Group G - Lazio (Italy) 8th of 20
Group H - Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia) 3rd of 16
Group I - Basel (Switzerland) 1st of 10
Group J - Tottenham Hotspur (England) 5th of 20
Group K - Schalke (Germany) 7th of 18
Group L - Athletic Bilbao (Spain) 9th of 20

If Tottenham are to overcome these hurdles then it has to be through a positive mental attitude. You can't go into a game thinking you are hard done by or that it is going to affect your performance because it will.

The only way to cope is to be totally confident of your fitness and believe it gas no effect if you do your job properly. The coaching staff have a big task on their hands, although motivating players to play Chelsea shouldn't be much of a problem.
