Spurs should invite Villa to train with us

Tottenham should be very interested and should be one of the clubs who have made a phone call to David Villa following the failure of his American club to make the MLS play-offs.

Like David Beckham did before him he could now look to go on loan from January to March which would enable Spurs to wait until the summer to purchase another striker when the prices would be lower. Players who have 18 months on their contract in January will be entering the last year of their contract in the summer will the resulting drop in their price.

Adding a touch of experience, a World Cup winner and a former Barcelona player who has won a multitude of trophies can only have a beneficial effect on our youngsters. He has kept his goalscoring touch netting 17 goals with a further 5 assists in just 27 games. The 33-year-old spoke to the Spanish program El Murcielago on Levante TV about his situation.

“I’m getting calls from all over the place since it became mathematically impossible for us to make the play-offs. There’s a lot of speculation about the possibility of a loan. There are rumours I’m hearing from lots of people, but nothing is concrete."

A short-term loan of such a high profile and quality player will once again have people talking about Tottenham, which is good for worldwide brand awareness and potential future commercial income. Do the Spanish take much notice of us now? Would they take more interest if he were here for a few months?

Clearly they would and that gives the opportunity for people to be exposed to the club and the youth project we are undertaking. Who knows it could lead to another quality player with experience taking an interest in our project and joining. It's all about awareness and as fans we shouldn't assume that everyone knows what we are doing, some of our own fans don't seem to know so why should players abroad.

We tried to sign Villa before he went to America so you would expect us to try again despite he suggesting that it isn't in his clubs best interests. He is the New York City captain so he has to put them first and they would need convincing that it would be a good idea.
"They make the hypothesis that I will be loaned out. But I don't think that would be the best decision for the club, they will want me to rest. I have a three-year contract in New York and they are expecting a lot from me and there is much I want to give them as well. To return to Europe is not really an option right now."
Nothing is ever certain as the Russian collusion over Willian showed and he has to say and do the right things as captain. Even if it is unlikely we should be making every effort we can to secure his services for a brief period. David Beckham came to train with us and gave the whole place a lift. The youngsters especially enjoyed the experience taking note of everything he did and the professional manner in which he did everything.

Perhaps having David Villa come and train for a few months would be an option to expose our young side to his knowledge and experience. Opportunities like this are few and far between and I'd be looking to expose our youngsters to the highest quality players as often as I could.

It would be just another small link with America to promote, the press love a story and an angle so our PR department ought to be promoting that angle. Brief Brad Friedel our US Ambassador with the messages we want to get across, add a quote from him and he'll be sought out for further views once again promoting the Tottenham name.

If there are truly world class player available during the MLS off-season I'd be looking to take a player a season for a few months to train with us. The knowledge and experience these players have is invaluable to youngsters keen to learn all they can and all the right habits.
