What price will Juventus offer for Lamela?

The story is now emerging from Italy that Juventus and Tottenham have held further talks having previously held discussions over Fernando Llorente and new West Ham centre-back Angelo Ogbonna.

Juventus are looking for a replacement for Arturo Vidal and cast an eye at Christian Eriksen with one journalist suggesting a price of around £12.72-million (€18m). That was never going to be possible at that price. There were also suggestions that Juventus wanted 23-year-old Argentinian Érik Lamela as well.

It now emerges from TMW that Tottenham and Juventus had a meeting in London and it was made clear to Juventus that there was no chance of getting Christian Eriksen but instead we offered Lamela. This report comes from an Italian daily that TMW are reporting and they go on to say that Juventus are seriously considering him.

There was a lot of talk earlier in the window that Juventus were trying to buy Lamela and that we were around £5-million (€7.08m) apart in valuations. The question for me is not should we sell Lamela but how much can we get for him, he has been here 2 years and hasn't shown the mental capacity to handle the Premier League. He has the talent to be a success over here but he doesn't seem to have that personal improvement streak in him that the very best players like Gareth Bale or Ronaldo have.

In my view he has the talent to be a world class star, but that takes a winning mentality, a mentality that says I will succeed whatever the odds, I will do whatever it takes to be a success. They are the players Tottenham must seek out and I do not believe Érik Lamela is one of them. Without that burning desire a player stays in his comfort zone, much like Mousa Dembélé.

It can be acquired if you work with a specialist or if you have a lightbulb moment and the penny finally drops or if suddenly the right motivation is found. Dembélé is certainly showing signs of having turned that corner so I suppose the question is how long do you wait for a talented player to grasp that mentality as there is no guarantee they will, Tom Huddlestone didn't develop it for instance.

Frustrating players are inconsistent because they are not motivated enough for certain individual games and that motivation come from within, external motivation is temporary, only touching the nerve of what truly motivates you will stir you into action. What motivates Lamela?

To me he is clearly in the wrong mindset and is going nowhere, he is going through the motions and I suspect that deep down he wants to leave and return to Italy. It's the same as Soldado wanting to return to the familiarity of Spain, I suspect part of him wants to return to Italy. That has to have an effect on his performance as his heart and soul is not in becoming the best player he can be at Tottenham.

A growing tide of Spurs fans would happily see him sold, the question is at what price?

There are rumours that although Saido Berahino is open to a move to Tottenham that he is holding out for one of the top four and if they don't materialise then and only then will he join Tottenham. We would have to agree a fee with WBA and as I wrote yesterday, he isn't worth the £25-million (€35.38m) being bandied about. You can read that reasoning at the link at the bottom of the article under Further Tottenham Reading (Sanity needs to return to the Berahino situation).

I have long felt we needed an experienced striker who would actively help the youngsters develop and Fernando Llorente does that at Juventus. The possibility of Llorente plus cash for Lamela will no doubt have been tentatively discussed. Spurs don't need to buy Llorente and Berahino unless Berahino and Clinton Njié are seen as being a realistic option on the right.

We'll learn that when we hear news of what Juventus will do next and whether Llorente is a part of those discussions.
