Lyon try for Fazio on the cheap, WBA interested also

He has only been a Tottenham a season but a second player that Mauricio Pochettino signed last summer could be on his way after just a year.

Benjamin Stambouli didn't progress in his first year as expected, solid enough in defence but he was bought because he had passing ability, alas Spurs saw little of it. As a result he saw little game time and had to be content with a regular slot in the UEFA Europa League. Harry Kane showed that if you perform there you will force your way into the side so there is no excuse for any player not to perform.

Our defence didn't improve last year when we signed Federico Fazio from Sevilla. He started off making mistakes, then settled into a rhythm with Jan Vertonghen before another howler marred his improvement. He didn't seem to recover and was always a little shaky afterwards. Having had a season within the system and with experience of the Premier League his game should certainly improve this season, but that may not be at Tottenham.

While Mauricio Pochettino is happy to keep him he is one of those players we will listen to offers for and as long as we make a profit would be allowed to leave. Lyon and West Bromwich Albion are both interested in signing him. He cost Tottenham a total of £7.04-million (€10m) so offers in excess of that have a chance.

Lyon suggested he be included in any deal for 21-year-old (22 in a few days) Clinton Njié but that would value him too highly. The reports suggested Lyon wanted £8.49-million (€12m) + Fazio which would make Njié a £15.57 -million (€22m) player at least and Lyon themselves are only asking £10.61-million (€15m) for the striker so I think we can mark those stories down as newspaper figures. The original asking price for Njié was £14.15-million (€12m) so it looks like a ploy to bump the price back up for the striker while getting a defender on the cheap.

Tottenham are keeping the two deals separate so that one is not dependant upon the other, such deals make things a lot more complicated and as we want Njié signed as soon as possible we don't need Fazio included in negotiations to complicate and delay things.
